Field Hockey Rallies Past Roger Williams in Second Half

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College field hockey team scored three goals in the second half to come away with a 3-2 victory over Roger Williams University on Wednesday night at Silfen Field.

The Camels, who trailed 1-0 at halftime, netted all three goals in a nine-minute stretch that spanned the third and fourth quarters. Sydney Cresta (Swampscott, Mass.) had a hand in all three tallies, finishing with a goal and two assists. Bridget McGann (West Hartford, Conn.) and Rowan Galanis (Ipswich, Mass.) also notched goals for the Camels.

Conn improved to 5-8 overall, matching its win total from a season ago with two games remaining on the schedule. Roger Williams dropped to 11-4 on the year.

The Hawks recorded the lone goal of the first half in the final minutes of the opening quarter. Kelly Doherty fed a ball from the right side to the front of the cage, and Chelsea King was there to wrap a shot around Conn goalie Liz Winemaster (Lake Forest, Ill.).

Trailing 1-0 at intermission, Conn came out firing with four shots in the first 3:30 of the second half. The last two came on a play in which McGann sprung Cresta for a breakaway against the goalie. However, Jill Haudenshield came out to cut off the angle and stopped Cresta's shot, and an attempt by McGann off the rebound was cleared away by a RWU defender.

The Camels finally broke through with 4:09 left in the third quarter, as Cresta provided the spark with a steal off RWU's back line. She then dribbled into the circle before dishing off to McGann, who juked Haudenshield and scored into an open net.

Just over two minutes later, Conn grabbed the lead as Cresta tracked down a long pass from Elektra Rodger (Greenwich, Conn.) and dribbled into the scoring circle. With a defender in front of her, Cresta drove to the end line and cut back to open up space, and she squeezed off a shot that beat the goalie to the far post.

The Camels nursed the 2-1 lead in the early stages of the fourth quarter. The Hawks nearly tied the game on a penalty corner, but a shot by Maddy Monahan was stopped on the goal line by Kylee Quinn (Sandwich, Mass.) and cleared away.

Moments later, Cresta picked off another pass from the RWU back line to give Conn possession. After a foul and a restart, Cresta ended up with the ball on her stick to the left of the cage. She then threaded a pass through the defense that found Galanis on the far side of the goal for an easy score.

The insurance goal was needed, as Sara Carney later scored on a penalty corner with 3:52 left in the game to give the Hawks a second goal. However, the Camels didn't allow another shot the rest of the way, and ultimately ran out the clock for the win.

Winemaster played all 60 minutes in goal for the Camels and recorded four saves. Haudenshield finished with one save for the Hawks while starter Hannah Brazil recorded a pair of stops in the first half.

Conn will next play at No. 10 Bates College on Saturday, October 21 at noon.
