Spatz's First Half Tally Leads Men's Soccer Past Bates 1-0

LEWISTON, Maine. – The Connecticut College men's soccer team remained unbeaten on the year, taking down host Bates College 1-0 on Saturday from Garcelon Field in Lewiston, Maine. With the win, Conn improves to 10-0-4 overall and 5-0-4 in the NESCAC, while Bates falls to 3-10-1 and 0-9-0 in conference play.

Conn (10-0-4, 5-0-4) dominated the opening 45 minutes, outshooting Bates (3-10-1, 0-9-0) 8-0. Matt Quiros-Newton (Alajuela, Costa Rica) recorded the first shot of the game just 1:50 into the contest, but his effort was turned aside by the Bobcats goalkeeper Trevor Hammond. 

With just under 20 minutes gone by in the half, Conn got the opening goal. Nate Pilson (Wilmington, Del.) played a lovely through ball into the path of Elliot Spatz (Bellevue, Wash.) who slotted the ball to the near post, putting the Camels up 1-0. Conn finished the half with four more shots, but was unable to extend the lead, heading to the break up 1-0.

Bates recorded their first shot of the contest with just under 30 minutes to play, but Harry Corman's header was collected by Peter Silvester (Smiths Parish, Bermuda). 10 minutes later, the Bobcats thought they had tied the contest, but Max Haberman (San Diego, Calif.) headed a Bates shot off the line, to keep the Camels up 1-0. The Camels held on, to come away with the 1-0 victory.

Conn outshot Bates 11-3 overall, including a 4-1 edge on shots on target, while holding a 7-3 advantage on corner kicks.

Silvester picked up the win in goal, making one save on the afternoon. Spatz tallied the lone goal of the contest, while Pilson picked up an assist. Gavin Vanden Berg (Lake Forest Park, Wash.) and Matt Scoffone (Thornton, Pa.) both tallied two shots.

Hammond made three saves on four shots for the Bobcats in goal. Corman tallied all three shots in the game for Bates to lead their attack.

Conn closes out the regular season on Tuesday afternoon in Middletown, Conn. as the Camels take on Wesleyan at 3:00 p.m.
