LEWISTON, Maine. – The Connecticut College women's soccer team picked up their fifth straight win, taking down host Bates 1-0 on Saturday from Garcelon field in Lewiston, Maine. With the win Conn improves to 9-5-0 overall and 4-5-0 in NESCAC play, while Bates falls to 3-8-3 overall and 1-7-1 in conference action.
Bates (3-7-3, 1-6-1) recorded the first shot of the contest just 2:43 into the match, but Sarah Hall (Tualatin, Ore.) watched the effort go wide. However, just a minute later Conn (8-5-0, 3-5-0) opened the scoring. Mya Johnson (Old Lyme, Conn.) continued her torrid stretch of play, tallying her fourth goal in the past three games to put the Camels up 1-0. Emma Quilty (Hingham, Mass.) played a pass into Johnson who shot from the right corner of the 18-yard box, floating it to the back post to put Conn in front.
After a shot by Jamie Scarpantonio (Glastonbury, Conn.) that was stopped in the sixth minute, Bates responded with the next four shots, but none ended up on target. With just over seven minutes left in the half, the Bobcats put their first effort on target, but Hall was ready for it, tallying her first save, as the Camels led 1-0 at the break.
Coming out of the half, Bates upped their pressure on the Camels back line looking for an equalizer, but Conn's defense held firm, keeping the Bobcats at bay. Both teams had a few shots, but neither side were able to trouble the keepers, until the final four minutes. The Bobcats had two good looks at goal, but once again Hall was strong in goal, as Conn held on for the 1-0 win.
Bates held a slim edge on overall shots 13-12, while Conn held a 4-3 lead on shots on target and an 8-5 advantage on corner kicks.
Hall earned the win between the sticks, tallying three saves in the contest. Johnson paced the Camels attack recording the only goal, while Quilty picked up an assist. Clare Mulvihill (West Caldwell, N.J.) and Scarpantonio both notched three total shots, with two and one on target respectively.
Samantha Bunar got the start in goal for Bates, making three saves on four shots. Mollie Franklin, Lily Houser, and Maeve Parmalee led the Bobcats offense, recording three shots each.
