Haberman's Late Tally Keeps Men's Soccer Undefeated in 3-2 Win Over No. 22 Amherst

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Max Haberman's (San Diego, Calif.) goal in the 89th minute lifted the No. 21 Connecticut College men's soccer team past No. 22 Amherst College 3-2 on Tuesday afternoon on Freeman Field. With the win Conn remains unbeaten at 7-0-2 and 3-0-2 in NESCAC play, while Amherst falls to 7-2-1 overall and 4-1-1 in conference play.

It was a cagey first half, as the two teams felt each other out. Conn (7-0-2, 3-0-2) recorded the first shot of the contest, but Alessandro Horvath Diano's (Budapest, Hungary) effort was blocked at 18:05. Amherst (7-2-1, 4-1-1) recorded the next two shots, but the Camels' defense recorded two blocks. Conn had the final five shots of the half, but the teams remained scoreless at the break.

The teams traded chances for the first 25 minutes of the second half, but it was the Mammoths who struck first. After a penalty was called on Conn, Ada Okorogheye stepped up for the spot kick and put Amherst up 1-0 at 72:59. It did not take long for the Camels to reply, as Jake Creus (Rye, N.Y) found Nate Pilson (Wilmington, Del.) who slotted the ball home to tie the game at one at 74:51.

Just over three minutes later, Creus found the back of the net himself, with Pilson returning the favor, putting Conn in front at 77:55. With just over five minutes remaining, Okorogheye's shot deflected off a couple of bodies, before entering the net to tie the game at two. With time winding down, the Camels were awarded a corner kick at 88:39. Horvath Diano played the ball short to Creus, who delivered the ball into the box, connecting with Haberman, who rifled the ball under the crossbar to give Conn the 3-2 win.

Conn held a slim edge on shots, outshooting Amherst 14-12 overall and 7-5 on shots on target, while each team had two corner kicks.

Peter Silvester (Smiths Parish, Bermuda) got the start in goal, and made three saves in picking up the win. Creus led the team with four points on one goal and two assists, while Pilson added three points on one goal and one assist, as Haberman picked up the winning goal.

Max Landa picked up the loss between the sticks, making four saves on seven shots. Okorogheye paced the Mammoths' attack, tallying two goals.

The Camels remain at home, hosting Williams in another NESCAC showdown during fall weekend, at 2:00 p.m. at Freeman Field on Saturday.
