Last-Minute Goal Sinks Field Hockey at No. 24 Trinity

HARTFORD, Conn. – No. 24 Trinity College used a last-minute goal to stave off Connecticut College, 4-3, Tuesday night in a NESCAC field hockey battle at Robin L. Sheppard Field.

A goal by Trinity's Demi Janis with 55 seconds remaining in regulation kept the upset-minded Camels at bay. Kendall Arnold (Pawling, N.Y.) scored a pair of goals on the night to pace Conn, including a tally with 5:31 left that tied the game at 3-3.

Janis and Katrina Winfield recorded two goals apiece as the Bantams improved to 6-4 overall (2-4 NESAC). Trinity goalie Olivia McMichael finished with five saves.

Conn scored in the opening minute of the game to strike the first blow. The Camels earned a pair of penalty corners at the start, and on the second put a pair of shots on goal. McMichael stopped the original attempt by Sydney Cresta (Swampscott, Mass.), but Bridget McGann (West Hartford, Conn.) fed the rebound to Arnold for the score and 1-0 advantage.

Janis tied the game at the end of the first period off a penalty corner, and neither team added a goal in the second. Trinity broke the 1-1 stalemate in the third behind a pair of goals from Winfield to go up 3-1, but Cresta responded with her first goal of the season to cut the deficit back to one.

In the fourth quarter, time was running down for the Camels when Rowan Galanis (Ipswich, Mass.) put a shot on goal that was saved by McMichael. However, Galanis collected her own rebound and fed Arnold for the equalizer. The goal was Arnold's team-leading third of the season.

Trinity earned a pair of penalty corners in the final four minutes and capitalized on the second. With less than a minute remaining to make up the deficit, the Camels pushed for another goal but ran out of time.

Trinity held a 13-8 advantage in shots and a 10-5 edge in penalty corners. Conn goalie Liz Winemaster (Lake Forest, Ill.) finished with four saves in the contest.

Conn (2-6 overall, 0-5 NESCAC) will next host No. 9 Williams College on Saturday, October 7 at noon. Prior to the game, the Camels will honor their 10 seniors in a special ceremony.
