Field Hockey Drops 4-1 Decision to No. 9 Williams

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College field hockey team dropped a 4-1 decision to No. 9 Williams College on Saturday afternoon in a NESCAC showdown at Silfen Field.

The Ephs scored a goal in each quarter—and the final three of the contest—to improve to 6-2 overall (3-1 NESCAC). Natalia Nolan recorded a pair of goals to lead the charge, and Claire Colvin added a goal and an assist.

Elektra Rodger (Greenwich, Conn.), who got the starting nod on Senior Day, scored the lone goal for the Camels. Liz Winemaster (Lake Forest, Ill.) recorded 10 saves in the cage, her fourth game this season with double-digit stops.

Williams scored just 4:35 into the game on a penalty corner to take the early lead. The insertion by Molly Hellman found the stick of Pilar Torres on the short side of the scoring circle, and her blast slipped through Winemaster for the 1-0 advantage.

The Camels tied the game in the second quarter as Rodger was in the right spot at the right time. Conn played a ball to the front of the goal that was deflected by a defender. Williams goalie Gates Tenerowicz lunged to the ground in an attempt to clear the ball away, but Rodger was there to sweep the ball over her head and into the back of the cage. The goal was her first of the season.

With 3:48 left in the half, Colvin connected with Nolan for the go-ahead tally that gave Williams a 2-1 lead at intermission. Colvin dribbled into the circle on the left side and sent a pass to the far post that found Nolan for the easy finish.

Colvin added a goal of her own on a spectacular individual effort in the third. After scooping the ball up onto her stick on the break, she carried it into the scoring circle and ripped a shot inside the left post for the 3-1 edge.

Nolan added her final tally in the opening minute of the fourth, stopping a clear attempt by the Conn defense and depositing a shot into the right corner of the goal. Tenerowicz protected the lead with a pair of saves in the final stanza and finished with three in the contest.

Prior to the game, the Camels honored their senior class with a special ceremony. A total of 10 players were recognized, including Ellie Brown (West Hartford, Conn.), Sydney Cresta (Swampscott, Mass.), Patricia Hewitt (Middletown, N.Y.), McKalynn Jacobsen (Fairfield, Conn.), Abby Krahmer (Duxbury, Mass.), Grace LaVigne (New Milford, Conn.), Bridget Mason (East Greenwich, R.I.), Hope Melanson (Wakefield, Mass.), Kylee Quinn (Sandwich, Mass.) and Rodger.

Conn (2-7 overall, 0-6 NESCAC) will next play at Eastern Connecticut State University on Tuesday, October 10 at 6:30 p.m.
