No. 7 Men's Soccer Moves on to Elite Eight After Defeating No. 5 Montclair State in PKs

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Jack Marvel (Marion, Mass.) converted in the fifth round of penalty kicks, while Peter Silvester (Smiths Parish, Bermuda) made two saves in PKs to lead the Connecticut College men's soccer team past No. 5 Montclair State 2-2, 4-3 on penalty kicks on Saturday afternoon in the NCAA Tournament Sweet Sixteen. With the win, Conn improves to 12-1-7 on the year, while Montclair State ends the year at 19-2-2.

Both teams started slowly feeling each other out, as Montclair State (19-2-2) recorded the first shot of the contest at 9:07. Conn (12-1-7) responded two minutes later with their first shot, but Matt Scoffone (Thornton, Pa.) had his shot stopped. At 14:09 however, the Camels opened the scoring. Scoffone was in on goal and fired low to the near side to put Conn up 1-0. The Camels stayed on the front foot, doubling their lead 13 minutes later. Scoffone played a ball to Matt Quiros-Newton (Alajuela, Costa Rica) who found the back of the net making it 2-0. Neither team scored for the rest of the half as Conn led 2-0 at the break.

Montclair came out in the second half looking to get back into the game, and cut the deficit in half just over six minutes in. Owen Murphy scored for the Red Hawks, as the Conn lead was cut to 2-1. Montclair continued to push, looking for the equalizer and got it in the 65th minute off a goal from Amer Lukovic, to tie the game at two. The teams remained tied for the rest of the half, and for the third consecutive game, Conn needed extra time.

In the first overtime period, Montclair thought they had the go-ahead goal off of a free kick, but a foul was called on the play ruling out the goal. In the second overtime the Red Hawks hit the crossbar twice, and had another goal ruled out for offsides, but the game remained tied and headed to penalty kicks.

In the first round of penalty kicks, Silvester drew first blood, coming up with a save on Lukovic, while Scoffone converted his attempt. Both teams made their next two shots, as Conn led 3-2 after three rounds. In the fourth round, Montclair's Anthony Viola converted, while Conn missed, as the game went to the fifth round tied at three. Silvester came up big again, making his second save during the spot kicks, before Marvel's shot deflected off the goalie and the crossbar, before crossing the line, as Conn advanced 4-3 on PKs.

Conn outshot Montclair 15-13 overall, while holding a 9-5 advantage on shots on target, with both teams earning five corner kicks.

Silvester had a strong game in goal, making three saves on five shots. Scoffone led the Camels attack, tallying three points on a goal and an assist, while Quiros-Newton added the other tally in open play. Marvel converted the winning goal from the spot, while Scoffone added four shots on target.

Shane Keenan was solid in goal for Montclair, making seven saves on nine shots. Lukovic and Murphy recorded goals for Red Hawks, while Viola added an assist.

Conn advances to the Elite Eight, where the Camels will take on No. 18 Washington College (Md.) tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 p.m. in Fredericksburg, Va.
