NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Connecticut College women's ice hockey team skated to a 2-2 tie against Salve Regina University on Saturday afternoon from Dayton Arena. With the tie, Conn moves to 1-1-1, while Salve moves to 5-2-1.
Conn (1-1-1) started quickly, firing off the first four shots, including the opening goal. The Camels opened the scoring just three minutes into the contest, as Kayla Kasprzak's (Buffalo, N.Y.) shot was stopped, but the rebound bounced to Sydney Cresta (Swampscott, Mass.) who batted the puck out of midway to give Conn the 1-0 lead. Salve (5-2-1) drew a power play at 7:27, firing off four shots on the man-advantage, before tying the game just as the power play expired. Gina Richard cleaned up a loose puck in front at 9:28 to tie the game at one. Neither side scored for the remainder of the period, as the game was tied after one.
The Seahawks fired off the first two shots of the second period, on another power play, but were unable to get any shots through to Devon Galizio (Wayland, Mass.). A few minutes later, the Camels were awarded a power play, and fired off two shots on goal, but were unable to beat Ellee Kopecky, as the teams remained tied heading to the third period.Â
The Camels opened the third period on the front foot, and took the lead 2:42 into the final frame. Serena Seiple (Wilmette, Ill.) collected a loose, and rifled a shot into the top corner, as Ashley Engle (Basking Ridge, N.J.) and Kylie McCarthy (Dedham, Mass.) picked up the assists. Salve received back-to-back power plays to grab the momentum. With just over five minutes remaining, Riley Esposito, tapped the puck past Galizio to tie the game at two.
Both sides pushed for a winner in regulation, but the game remained tied and headed to overtime. In the extra period, Conn had the better of the chances to get the winning goal, but both goalies stood tall, as the squads settled for the 2-2 tie.
Conn outshot Salve 35-15, while winning 36 of 55 face-offs.
