Two Third Period Goals Lift Women's Hockey Past Manhattanville 4-2

PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Connecticut College women's ice hockey team used two third period power play goals to take down host Manhattanville 4-2 on Sunday evening from the Playland Ice Casino in Purchase, N.Y.. With the win, Conn improves to 2-1-1 overall, while Manhattanville falls to 2-5-1.

Conn (2-1-1) started quickly, firing off the first shot of the contest just 46 seconds in, but Casey Godfrey's (Redondo Beach, Calif.) effort was stopped. Manhattanville (2-5-1) responded 20 seconds later with their first shot, but Conn goalie Jillian Wexler (Plainsboro, N.J.) made the save. It was the Valiants that opened the scoring however midway through the period. Taylor Willoughby got the shot past Wexler off assists from Virginia Birnie and Katherine Stahl to put Manhattanville up 1-0. Conn looked for an equalizer before the end of the period, but trailed 1-0 after one.

The Camels tied the game early in the second period, off a tally from Sydney Cresta (Swampscott, Mass.). At 2:57 Cresta found the back of the net, as Casey Chesner (Great Falls, Va.) and Kiley Smith (Marion, Mass.) picked up the helpers. The teams traded shots on goal for most of the period, until the final nine seconds, when Conn took their first lead of the evening. Serena Seiple (Wilmette, Ill.) took a pass from Alana Burm (Hingham, Mass.) beating Jewells Austin goalie to give the Camels a 2-1 lead heading to the third period.

After giving up the late goal, Manhattanville came out hungry for the tying goal and got it just over four minutes into the period on a short-handed goal. Gabrielle Cox beat Wexler to tie the game at two at 4:16. It did not take long for the Camels to retake the lead however. On the same power play, Kate Hagness (Madison, Conn.) put Conn back in front of assists from Burm and Cresta at 4:55. Five and a half minutes later Claire Sammons (Naperville, Ill.) scored on another power play, to give Conn an insurance marker at 10:22, with Seiple notching the assist. The Valiants pushed late, trying to get back into the game, but the Camels came away with the 4-2 victory.

Conn outshot Manhattanville 31-23, while Valiants held a slim edge on face-offs, winning 25 of 47.

Wexler collected her first win as a Camel, making 21 saves on 23 shots. Cresta and Seiple both recorded a goal and an assist each, while Burm added two assists, with Sammons tallying one goal, and one assist a piece for Chesner and Smith. Seiple led the way with seven shots on goal, while Sammons added six. Sammons won eight of 14 draws, while Charlotte Harris (Ystrad Mynach, Wales) won seven of 13, as  Conn was 2-2 on the penalty kill and 2-3 on the power play.

Austin got the start in goal for Manhattanville, making 27 saves on 31 shots. Four Valiants tallied a single point, with Cox and Willoughby each recording one goal. Manhattanville was 0-2 on the power play and 1-3 on the penalty kill.

Conn returns home for two games against Williams College, with the first game on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. in Dayton Arena.
