NEW LONDON, Conn. - Devon Galizio (Wayland, Mass.) made 17 saves and Serena Seiple (Willmette, Ill.) tallied the only goal as the Connecticut College women's ice hockey team defeated UMass Boston 1-0 on Tuesday night from Dayton Arena. With the win, Conn improves to 3-3-1 on the year, while Boston falls to 3-7-3.
UMass Boston (3-7-3) fired off the first shot of the game a minute into the contest, but Galizio was ready. Conn (3-3-1) answered with their first shot 30 seconds later, when Sydney Frank (Stillwater, N.Y.) had her effort turned away. Neither team generated much offense for the remainder of the period, as the teams were scoreless after one.
The second period was much like the first, but the Camels controlled most of the play, but again neither team scored, as the game was tied at zero heading to the third period.
Conn came to life in the third period, outshooting Boston 17-6 in the final frame. The Camels were awarded an early power play, but were unable to take advantage of the extra attacker. Conn finally broke through at 7:38. Gillian Kibbey's (Lawrenceville, N.J.) shot was stopped, but she collected her own rebound and fed the puck to Seiple, who rifled a shot into the top corner to put the Camels up 1-0. The Beacons answered, trying to tie the game, but Galizio and the Camels held strong. With time running down, Conn shut the door, not allowing Boston the opportunity to pull the goalie, as the Camels came away with the 1-0 win.
Conn outshoot Boston 29-17, while both teams won 18 face-offs.
Galizio earned the shutout in goal, stopping all 17 shots faced. Seiple tallied the lone goal, while Kibbey picked up the only assist. Seiple, Alana Burm (Hingham, Mass.), and Bridget McGann (West Hartford, Conn.) all tallied three shots on goal to lead the Camels. Sydney Cresta (Swampscott, Mass.) won seven of 13 face-offs, while Charlotte Harris (Ystrad Mynach, Wales) won four of five, as Conn went 0-3 on the power play and 2-2 on the penalty kill.
Leah Bosch got the start in goal, stopping 28 of 29 shots. Ana Gustafson led the Beacons with three shots on goal, while Boston went 3-3 on the penalty kill and 0-2 on the power play.
Conn hits the road for one game this weekend, as the Camels travel to Boston, Mass. to take on Suffolk University at 6:00 p.m. on Friday night.
