Coast Guard Tops WBB

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College women's basketball team suffered an 80-53 setback against crosstown rival Coast Guard Academy on Wednesday night in non-conference action at Luce Field House.

Coast Guard (8-2 overall) shot 41 percent for the game and led for the majority of the contest. Glory Blethen led three Bears in double digits with 18 points and added eight rebounds and three assists. Kira Wood finished with 17 points, five boards and five assists while Kelly Hagerty tacked on 14 points and seven caroms.

The Camels got off to a slow start and never recovered, shooting just 2-for-19 in the opening quarter. Arliana Torres (Toms River, N.J.) paced Conn with nine points while Rebecca Oberman-Levine (Hamden, Conn.), Catherine Cole (Lebanon, N.H.) and Ray Nnabuife (Baltimore, Md.) chipped in seven apiece.

After Cole drilled a three-pointer on Conn's first possession of the game, Coast Guard responded with 19 straight points to take control. The Camels ended the drought in the final seconds of the period but trailed 19-5 heading into the second.

The Bears continued pad the margin in the second stanza thanks to 4-for-9 shooting from deep. Wood drilled a three at the halftime buzzer to give the visitors a 37-18 lead at the break.  
Coast Guard led by a comfortable margin in the second half, although Conn cut into the deficit in the fourth. The Camels outscored the Bears 24-16 in the period thanks to seven points from Nnabuife.

Conn College (3-6 overall) will next play at Holy Cross on Thursday, December 7 at 6:00 p.m.
