Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Bowdoin's Late Surge Ends Men's Ice Hockey's Three Game Win Streak

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College men's ice hockey team led 3-1 in the third period, but the Bowdoin College Polar Bears tallied three straight goals, to come away with the 4-3 win on Saturday afternoon from Dayton Arena. With the loss Conn falls to 3-5-0 overall and 2-4-0 in NESCAC play, while Bowdoin improves to 4-2-1 on the year and 2-2-1 in conference play.

Bowdoin (4-2-1, 2-2-1) opened the scoring early, jumping in front 1-0 at 3:28 on a goal from Luke Wheeler. Conn (3-5-0, 2-4-0) responded just 1:50 later, as Sean Detloff (Harrison Township, Mich.) found Rocco Testa-Basi (Holland Patent, N.Y.), outletting Logan Cleary (Mentor, Ohio), who beat the Polar Bears goalie to make it 1-1. The rest of the opening period was chippy, but neither team found the goal, as the game was tied at one, after one.

The teams traded chances for much of the second period, but the goalies continued their strong play in net, keeping the game tied. However, with just under four minutes remaining, the Camels went on a 5-on-3 power play and made no mistake. Cole Eichler (King, Ontario), Michael DiMascolo (Cranston, R.I.), and Steven Ardagna (Roswell, Ga.) passed the puck around the outside, before DiMascolo laid it off to Ardagna, whose shot rifled past Alex Kozic to make it 2-1 Conn at 16:34. The Camels closed out the period, taking the 2-1 lead into the third.

Conn extended the lead to 3-1 at 9:15, when John Russo (South Windsor, Conn.) collected a pass from Quinn Kennedy (Silver Spring, Md.), firing it into the top corner for the goal. Trailing by two, Bowdoin pushed looking to get back into the game. With just over seven minutes remaining, Jack Gilligan found the net, cutting it to 3-2. The Polar Bears tied the game three minutes later, as Wheeler knotted the game at three. At 18:20, Bowdoin jumped in front on a goal by Michale Dinges, making it 4-3. Conn pushed late with the empty net, but could not find the equalizing goal, falling 4-3.

Bowdoin outshot Conn 32-22, while winning 42 of 75 face-offs.

Will McEvoy (Ottawa, Ontario) continued his run of play in goal, stopping 28 of 32 shots. Detloff led the Camels with two points on two assists, while Ardagna, Cleary, and Russo all tallied one goal. Kareem Alazem (McLean, Va.) and Seth Stadheim (Lyme, N.H.) both recorded four shots on goal, while Alazem, Detloff, and Jon Barker (North Kingstown, R.I.) blocked two shots each. Russo led Conn in the circle, winning 15 of 26 draws, going 2-2 on the penalty kill and 1-6 on the power play.

Andy Beran got the start in goal for Bowdoin, making 19 saves on 22 shots. Wheeler led the Polar Bears with two goals, while six others added one point. Bowdoin finished the game going 0-2 on the power play and 5-6 on the penalty kill.

Conn returns to action in the new year, traveling to Beverly, Mass. to take on Endicott College at 7:00 p.m.
