Colby Clips Women's Ice Hockey 3-0

WATERTOWN, Maine – The Connecticut College women's ice hockey team fell to Colby 3-0 on Friday night at Jack Kelley Rink.

With the victory, the Mules have secured a home game for the upcoming NESCAC tournament. The win marks their fourth straight victory overall and sixth straight over Conn. The Camels have dropped three in a row, but have already solidfied a berth in the conference tournament next weekend.

The Mules started hot in the first period and never looked back. Just 1:36 into the contest, the hosts got on the scoreboard when Jillian Mazzocca put in a cross-ice one-timer from teammate Beth Sinson to go up 1-0.

The visitors played well in the middle portion of the frame, outshooting the Mules 11-6. But Colby was able to bookend the opening period with another goal in the final two minutes. This time, Tate Senden scored to put the Mules up 2-0. After Colby earned a two-on-one advantage, McKinley Karpa skated up ice past a diving Conn defender. Taking the puck out wide to the right, she dished it across ice to Senden who put in the far post wrister past goaltender Abby Wieczorek (Winnetka, Ill.). The Mules would take the two-goal lead into the first intermission.

In the second, the two teams battled for control but could not break through on the scoreboard. Both squads recorded 11 shots on goal, but Wieczorek and Colby goaltender Mandy Busky held strong to keep the score at 2-0 heading into the third period.

The Camels tried desperately to get back into the game with time winding down, peppering Busky with several shot attempts. But the visitors could not cut into the lead.

At the 15:57 mark, Colby tallied its final score of the game when Karpa utilized excellent skating and puck control to put a backhanded shot past Wieczorek. The hosts would hold Conn scoreless the rest of the way to preserve the 3-0 victory.

Busky earned her fourth shutout of the season, registering 26 saves. Wieczorek stopped 20 shots for the visitors.

Both teams played an exceptionally clean contest committing zero penalties during the 60 minutes of game time.
