Women's Lacrosse Tops Westfield State 15-11

WESTFIELD, Mass. — Senior Emily Yorns (Longmeadow, Mass.) scored five goals to lead the Connecticut College women's lacrosse team to a 15-11 victory over Westfield State on Wednesday evening at Alumni Field.

Yorns paced the Camels' offensive attack, which also featured hat tricks from teammates Aine Downey (Brookline, Mass.), Campbell Johnston (Duxbury, Mass.) and Kate Coughlin (Reading, Mass.).

Following a 6-6 tie at halftime, the Camels outscored the Owls 8-1 in the third quarter to remain unbeaten in non-conference play. Conn improves to 4-2 overall, while Westfield State falls to 3-3 on the season.

The visitors came out firing in the first quarter, scoring the contest's first four scores in less than seven minutes of play. Yorns registered two goals, while Downey and Coughlin added a tally to start the offensive attack.

But the hosts came back strong, scoring six of the next seven goals to take a 6-5 lead with 5:15 left in the second frame.

Yorns stopped the run with a goal before halftime, and the two teams were knotted at six scores each with one half left to play.

Out of the break, the Camels played a decisive 15 minutes, outscoring the Owls 8-1 in the third quarter alone. The trio of Yorns, Johnston, and Coughlin were instrumental in the success, tallying a combined seven goals during that span.

Leading 14-7, heading into the final frame, the Owls did their best to get back into the game. The hosts cut the lead to 14-10 and held the Camels scoreless through the majority of the period, but Johnston tacked on a final goal to put the game out of reach.

With the victory, the Camels improve to 3-0 all-time against Westfield State. Goaltender Violette Nidds (Ridgewood, N.J.) stopped a season-high 13 shots between the pipes to earn the win. Downey led the visitors with four ground balls, while Abigail Gleeson-Feldman (Nanuet, N.Y.) and Emma Ognibene (New Canaan, Conn.) registered three ground balls each.

Connecticut College (4-2 overall, 0-2 NESCAC) will return to action on Saturday, March 25. The Camels will play Williams College on the road at 1 p.m.
