MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – Fifth-ranked Middlebury College handed the Connecticut College men's tennis team a 9-0 setback on Saturday morning in NESCAC action at the Nelson Recreation Center.
After sweeping through doubles, Middlebury captured all but one singles contest in straight sets. The Panthers won their fourth straight match and improved to 8-2 (4-1 NESCAC) on the year.
Conn's doubles team of Walker Mulligan (Guilford, Conn.) and James Serhant III (Hadley, Mass.) put up quite a fight at the No 2 position. With the score tied at 2-2, Middlebury's Neel Epstein and Robby Ward broke serve twice and ripped off four straight games to build a 6-2 lead. Later in the match, the Camels broke back and reeled off three straight games to pull within 7-5. However, the Panthers sealed the victory in the next game, securing all three doubles points for a 3-0 advantage.
In singles action, Aaron Fleishman (Brookline, Mass.) got off to a great start against Aidan Harris at the top spot. Fleishman took the first set off Harris—who entered the day ranked 12th in the region in singles—by a 6-2 tally. Harris then flipped the momentum, dropping only one game over the next two sets en route to victory.
Conn College (4-6 overall, 0-4 NESCAC) returns to action at sixth-ranked Williams College on Sunday, April 2.
