AMHERST, Mass. – Connecticut College dropped a 15-11 final at No. 7 Amherst College on Wednesday night in a NESCAC men's lacrosse showdown at Gooding Field.
In a seesaw game that featured several momentum swings, the Mammoths held off a late charge to improve to 9-2 overall (5-2 NESCAC). Bob Gross finished with three goals and three assists to lead all scorers with six points, one of four Amherst players to net a hat trick on the night.
JJ Ford (Clinton, Conn.) paced the Camels with two goals and two assists.
Jack Tenzer (Charlotte, N.C.),
Bobby Chang (South Salem, N.Y.) and
Aidan McAvoy (Charlotte, N.C.) also chipped in two goals apiece, and
Will Rice (New Rochelle, N.Y.) finished with 14 saves in the cage.
The two sides traded goals in the opening minutes of the contest before Amherst went on a 4-0 run to close the period. After the Mammoths added another goal at the start of the second to extend the lead to 7-2, Conn responded with a 4-0 run over the final 7:00 of the half to claw back into the game. McAvoy supplied a pair of scores during the stretch, which helped the Camels trim the deficit back to one by intermission.
Amherst shook off the bad end to the half and outscored Conn 5-1 in the third quarter to regain control. However, the Camels once again battled back, this time with a 3-0 spurt that featured a pair of goals by Chang and another from
Liam Horkan (Malden, Mass.). The flurry left the visitors trailing by a 12-10 count with 11:22 left in the game.
Tanyr Krummenacher was the difference for Amherst down the stretch, contributing to all three goals as the hosts sewed up the win. His final marker, which came on an empty net with just under two minutes to go, was his team-leading 37th goal of the season.
Conn College (4-6 overall, 2-5 NESCAC) will next host Bates College on Saturday, April 15 at 11:00 a.m. The game will be held at Mitchell College in New London, Conn.
