Women's Lacrosse Falls To Amherst

NEW LONDON, Conn. -- The Connecticut College women's lacrosse team fell to No. 15 Amherst on Wednesday night at Silfen Field. The Mammoths topped the Camels 14-4 thanks to stifling defensive play which limited the hosts to its second-lowest goal total of the season.

The Amherst duo of Emily Peterson and Clara Sosa combined for eight total goals to lead the visitors to their fourth conference win of the season. The Mammoths improve to 8-3 overall this season and currently sit seventh in the NESCAC standings.

Conn drops to 4-7 overall and the Camels are still in search of their first conference victory of the season. Emily Yorns (Longmeadow, Mass.) paced the hosts with a pair of goals, while Hailey Fahey (Norwich, Vt.) and Kate Coughlin (Reading, Mass.) each added a tally.

The Mammoths played excellent defense all game long, but really set the tone in the first quarter. The visitors only allowed two total shots throughout the first period. Following back-to-back goals from Peterson to open the contest, the Camels finally got on the scoreboard with 4:09 left in the stanza. Yorns fought through a slew of Amherst defenders to put a shot past goaltender Jessye Salmon to cut the lead to 2-1. But the Mammoths responded with two more goals to wrap up the first period.

The second frame was more of a defensive stalemate. The Mammoths once again held the Camels to a single tally off the stick of Coughlin, but the hosts buckled down and only allowed two scores from the visitors. Amherst would carry the 6-2 lead heading into the halftime intermission.

Following the break, Sosa tallied her second goal of the game to increase the advantage to 7-2. At the 8:16 mark, Abigail Gleeson-Feldman (Nanuet, N.Y.) forced a turnover in the Camels' defensive end. She hustled all the way down the field and delivered a perfect pass to Fahey who converted on the score for the team's third goal of the game.

Sosa and the Mammoths responded with back-to-back scores from the attacker to up the lead to 9-3. With only seven seconds remaining in the third, Yorns was able to find the back of the net to give the hosts life entering the final stanza.

But the Amherst defense buckled down, not allowing a single shot on goal. The Mammoths tallied five scores in the fourth to seal the 14-4 victory.

Salmon earned the win for the visitors, registering five saves. Camels goaltender Violette Nidds (Ridgewood, N.J.) stopped six shots in the losing effort.

Connecticut College (4-7 overall, 0-7 NESCAC) will be back in action on Saturday, April 15 on the road against Bates.
