NEW LONDON, Conn. – Connecticut College has hired Patrick Mahoney as an assistant coach for the men's basketball program, as announced by head coach
Tim Sweeney.
Mahoney will officially join the Camels in August. He previously served as an assistant coach at Baruch College for the 2022-23 season under head coach John Alesi.
"We are incredibly excited to have Pat joining our team," said Sweeney. "His combination of a stellar playing career and experience working with several top coaches will help elevate our program to new heights. Pat is a hard worker with a genuine concern for those around him that will greatly benefit our current and future student-athletes."
As an assistant for the Bearcats, Mahoney helped lead the program to a 22-6 record and an NCAA Tournament berth in his debut season. Baruch also won its second-straight City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) tournament title, clinching the league's automatic bid with wins over Hunter College and Lehman College.
Mahoney joined the coaching ranks after an impressive career as a student-athlete at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. A two-year captain who recorded more than 1,000 points and 400 rebounds over a pandemic-shortened career, he averaged a team-high 15.1 points and 5.1 rebounds in 27.8 minutes per game as a senior while leading the Engineers to a Sweet 16 berth in the NCAA Tournament.
During the 2019-20 season he was named both Liberty League and NABC East Region Player of the Year, and was a First Team NABC Division III All-American while guiding RPI to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
The Camels return all five starters and 13 letter winners from a squad that secured a 14-11 record (5-5 NESCAC) in 2022-23. The Camels also qualified for the NESCAC Championship for the second time during Sweeney's tenure, falling to eventual champion Hamilton College in the quarterfinals.
