Field Hockey Nabs Shutout Win at Wellesley

WELLESLEY, Mass. – The Connecticut College field hockey team picked up its first win of the 2023 season on Tuesday night, topping Wellesley College by a 1-0 final in non-conference action at Butler Stadium.

The game's lone goal came in the final minutes of the third quarter when Kendall Arnold (Pawling, N.Y.) notched her first tally of the season. Conn's defense took care of the rest, limiting the Blue to only three shots in the contest, none of which made it on goal.

After a scoreless first half in which Conn produced a 4-0 edge in penalty corners and forced Wellesley goalie Kyra Deehr-Lewis into making six saves, the visitors came out hungry for a goal in the second stanza. After a restart in their offensive end late in the third period, the Camels put the ball into the striking circle on a feed by Bridget Mason (East Greenwich, R.I.). Arnold trailed the ball into the circle and maneuvered past a defender before sending a tomahawk strike past a charging Deehr-Lewis and into the cage.

The Camels looked to add to the lead in the fourth but couldn't slip another shot past Deehr-Lewis, who finished with 10 saves. However, it didn't matter in the end, as Conn posted its first shutout since 2021. Liz Winemaster (Lake Forest, Ill.) played all 60 minutes in goal and picked up her first collegiate shutout.

Conn (1-2 overall) will next play at No. 16 Bowdoin College on Saturday, September 16 at 11:00 a.m.
