BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Connecticut College field hockey team came up on the short end of a 1-0 final at No. 16 Bowdoin College on Friday night in a NESCAC match-up at Ryan Field.
The Camels yielded the lone goal with 8:23 remaining in the opening half and couldn't make up the deficit. Goalie
Liz Winemaster (Lake Forest, Ill.) kept Conn in the game with a season-high 12 saves.
The visitors produced several scoring chances in the opening half but couldn't capitalize. In the first quarter,
Sydney Cresta (Swampscott, Mass.) nearly snuck a shot under the left pad of Bowdoin goalie Julia Arsenault but was denied. Conn's next chance came on a penalty corner in the second period when
McKalynn Jacobsen (Fairfield, Conn.) sent a shot through traffic that was turned away.
Hope Melanson (Wakefield, Mass.) followed up with a shot off the rebound, but Melissa Shunk was planted at the far post and made a defensive save for the Polar Bears.
Five minutes later, Bowdoin's Maya Malenfant found the back of the cage off an assist by Faith Jennings. The centering pass came from the left side of the circle, and Malenfant quickly buried a shot inside the post on the short side.
The Camels had one more scoring chance in the half on a penalty corner, but a blast from the top of the circle by
Kylee Quinn (Sandwich, Mass.) was stopped by Arsenault. Winemaster was equally as impressive on her defensive end, finishing the half with seven saves.
Conn kept hunting for the equalizer in the second half, but its best chance came in the opening seconds of the fourth quarter.
Rowan Galanis (Ipswich, Mass.) nearly tied the game with an open look on the break, but Arsenault made another stellar save—and then a second on a follow-up attempt—to keep the Camels off the scoreboard.
Conn (1-3 overall, 0-2 NESCAC) will next play at Smith College on Wednesday, September 20 at 7:00 p.m.
