NEW LONDON, Conn – The Connecticut College men's soccer team closed out a short two-game home stand, defeating visiting Salve Regina University, 2-0 on Tuesday afternoon from Freeman Field. With the win, Conn improves to 2-0-1 overall, while Salve moves to 3-2-0.
The opening 20 minutes was back-and-forth, with Conn (2-0-1) recording two of the first three shots of the contest. Following the opening action, Conn upped the pressure on Salve (3-2-0), recording the next five shots, including an effort by
Rye Jaran (Downingtown, Pa.) that hit the corner of the goal frame, but stayed out. With just over five minutes to play in the opening 45 minutes, a Conn corner kick bounced around before falling to
Alessandro Horvath Diano, who rifled a shot just under the crossbar to put the Camels up 1-0.
The second half was much like the first, as Conn continued to put pressure on the Seahawks. The Camels opened the second 45 minutes, by recording the first seven shots. Salve responded with a short burst, firing off two shots in the span of three and a half minutes, but the lone effort on target was easily collected by
Peter Silvester (Smiths Parish, Bermuda). With just under eight minutes remaining, a long goal kick from Silvester bounced to
Elliot Spatz (Bellevue, Wash.) who raced in, finessing a shot into the bottom corner to double the Camels lead at 82:06. Conn rode out the rest of the contest to come away with a 2-0 victory.
The Camels led in every facet of the game, outshooting the Seahawks 20-3 overall, including a 7-1 advantage on shots on goal, while receiving 13 corner kicks to Slave's three.
Silvester played all 90 minutes in goal, turning away the only shot on target. Spatz and Horvath Diano paced the attack with two points on one goal apiece, while Silvester added an assist. Spatz,
Matt Scoffone (Thornton, Pa.) and
Matt Quiros-Newton (Alajuela, Costa Rica) all recorded three shots.
Zach Rock was solid between the sticks for Salve, recording five saves on seven shots, in 90 minutes of action. Jordan Borges, Liam Berlingieri, and Evan Arpin all recorded one shot for the Seahawks in the contest.
Conn heads out on the road for the first of a three-game road trip, as the Camels head to Maine to take on Bowdoin in NESCAC action on Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
