Volleyball Blanks Elms

CHICOPEE, Mass. – The Connecticut College women's volleyball team powered to a 3-0 victory (25-14, 28-26, 25-15) at Elms College on Tuesday night in a non-conference match-up at Picknelly Arena.

The Camels posted 49 kills on the evening—their highest total in a three-set match this season—and hit .305 as a team. Katherine Randall (Chicago, Ill.) led the charge with a season-high 15 kills on 31 swings and hit .484. She also recorded four of Conn's six service aces in the contest and added nine digs.

Emma Wheeler (Meredith, N.H.) and Rae Wartelle (Tacoma, Wash.) also had solid nights at the net. Each notched season-high kill totals, with Wheeler finishing with 13 and Wartelle tacking on 12. Natasha Shrivastava (San Diego, Calif.) paced the offense with 28 assists and also supplied 11 digs.

After falling into a 3-0 hole to start the match, Conn quickly rebounded and took a 9-7 advantage behind a 4-0 spurt that included a pair of aces by Randall and kills from Wartelle and Amanda Kreidler (Aliso Viejo, Calif.). The Camels nursed the lead until closing out the set with nine unanswered points, six of which came off kills by Randall.

Another quick start gave Elms a 4-0 lead in the second. The Blazers then led 16-10 before Conn battled its way back, using a 5-1 stretch to cut the deficit to two. After finally pulling even at 20-20 on a kill by Wheeler, Conn dropped the next three points and later faced set point trailing 24-22. The Camels ended up fighting off a total of three set points, and wrapped up the set by claiming four of the final five points.

Conn never trailed in the final set and used a 5-0 run to build a 15-9 cushion. The Camels committed only two attack errors in the set as Wartelle supplied five kills and Randall chipped in four.

Conn College (4-4 overall) will next host Bowdoin College on Friday, September 22 at 7:00 p.m.
