NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College women's volleyball team outlasted Bowdoin College to collect a 3-2 victory in Friday night NESCAC action at Luce Field House.
The Camels trailed 2-1 in the match but rallied to capture the final two sets, winning by set scores of 25-11, 25-27, 24-26, 28-26 and 15-7. It marked Conn's first NESCAC win of the season, as well as its first win over the Polar Bears since 2014.
Katherine Randall (Chicago, Ill.) and
Riley Lord (Exeter, N.H.) powered the Camels on offense, finishing with 17 and 14 kills, respectively.
Natasha Shrivastava (San Diego, Calif.) handed out 42 assists and added 11 digs while
Emma Wheeler (Meredith, N.H.) recorded nine kills and eight blocks.
The Camels came out firing on all cylinders in the opening set, blitzing the Polar Bears from the get go. Conn recorded 12 kills, four blocks and three aces en route to the early lead. Wheeler and Lord each provided four kills to pace the attack.
Conn led 15-8 in the second before Bowdoin finally fought back. The Polar Bears closed the gap with a 5-0 run before taking their first lead at 18-7 on a kill by Cameron Shelly. The score remained tight the rest of the way, with the visitors winning the final three points to even the match at a set apiece.
With the Camels poised to win the third set, Bowdoin fought off three set points to even the tally at 24-24. Skye LaMendola then supplied back-to-back kills to give the Polar Bears the 2-1 edge.
Randall helped bring the Camels back with six kills in the fourth. With the score once again knotted at 24-24, Conn rallied to win four out of the next six points to secure the set, with the final kill being hammered down by
Amanda Kreidler (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) to extend the match.
After three straight sets of intense action and close scores, Conn erased all the drama in the fifth by jumping out to a 9-2 lead. The Camels' final two points came off swings by Kreidler, who finished with four kills on the night.
LaMendola led all players with 17 kills while Lily Janas added 16 for the Polar Bears.
Conn College (5-4 overall, 1-2 NESCAC) returns to action on Saturday, September 23 at Worcester State University in a tri-match that includes Westfield State University. The Camels are slated to play at 3:00 and 5:00 p.m.
