WORCESTER, Mass. – The Connecticut College women's volleyball team picked up a pair of 3-0 victories in a tri-match with Westfield State University and Worcester State University on Saturday afternoon at John P. Brissette '88 Court.
The Camels opened the day by topping Westfield State by set scores of 25-20, 27-25 and 25-14.
Emma Wheeler (Meredith, N.H.) and
Rae Wartelle (Tacoma, Wash.) led the way with 10 kills apiece, and
Olivia Dow (San Anselmo, Calif.) recorded season highs of 29 assists and 10 digs.
Conn returned to the court later in the afternoon to post a win over Worcester State by set scores of 25-19, 25-19 and 25-17.
Katherine Randall (Chicago, Ill.) and
Riley Lord (Exeter, N.H.) led the offensive charge with seven kills each, and Dow supplied 18 assists while
Caroline Festersen (Omaha, Neb.) added a team-high 17 digs.
Conn College (7-4 overall) will next host Williams College on Friday, September 29 at 7:30 p.m.
Game 1 – Conn College 3, Westfield State 0
Conn used an early 7-0 run to seize control in the opening set. After Westfield State closed the gap to 11-9, the Camels responded with five unanswered points that included a pair of kills by Lord and cruised to the finish.
The Owls opened the second set with six straight points to put the Camels in a tough spot. Conn got to work chipping away at the deficit, and eventually pulled in front at 20-19 on a kill by Randall. The two sides traded points the rest of the way, until a kill by Wheeler and an error by the Owls gave Conn a 2-0 edge in the match.
The Camels never trailed in the final set after a 7-2 start. Wheeler and Wartelle contributed four kills apiece while Randall served for four aces.
Lauren Carnes paced the Owls (0-12 overall) with six kills in the contest.
Game 2 – Conn College 3, Worcester State 0
The teams were locked in a competitive first set when Conn took control behind a 6-0 run that yielded a 16-11 advantage. The Camels finished with three blocks in the set, with Wartelle contributing to each.
With the score locked at 12-12 in the second set, Conn won seven of the next 10 points to open up a 20-15 edge. Later on,
Valentina Baehrle (Redwood City, Calif.) served for an ace to hand the Camels a 2-0 lead in the match.
Conn broke open the final set with a 6-0 stretch on the serve of Riley—who recorded a pair of aces and a kill in the spurt—to go up 17-10. Festersen later closed out the match with Conn's eighth ace of the contest.
Angela Colonis led Worcester State (5-8 overall) with seven kills.
