NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College women's volleyball team picked up another big NESCAC victory on Friday night, fighting back to take the final two sets and win 3-2 against Williams College at Luce Field House.
The Camels extended their win streak to five games and improved to 8-4 overall (2-2 NESCAC).
Katherine Randall (Chicago, Ill.), who was named NESCAC Player of the Week on Monday, led Conn with 17 kills, nine digs and four block assists.
Emma Wheeler (Meredith, N.H.) and
Zoe Watts (Chicago, Ill.) added 11 kills apiece, and the former also recorded six block assists at the net.
Williams (9-1 overall) entered the night unbeaten in NESCAC play and was receiving votes in the latest AVCA/TARAFLEX Division III Poll. Celia Adams paced the Ephs with a match-high 18 kills while Keely Campuzano and Helen Qian each supplied 11.
In the opening set, the score was even until the Camels built a small lead behind a 3-0 spurt. The Camels then led all the way to a 25-21 finish, with the duo of
Amanda Kreidler (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) and Wheeler pacing the attack. Kreidler contributed four kills and a pair of block assists in the frame while Wheeler chipped in three kills and two block assists.
The Ephs fired back to win the next two sets by 25-17 and 25-20 tallies. Williams used a 6-0 run to seize control in the second and got five kills from Adams, and in the third the visitors racked up a total of 16 kills as a team.
Conn cruised to a 25-16 win in the fourth set to even the match, leading by as many as 12 in the stanza. The Camels blocked down five balls and recorded 10 kills, four of which came from Randall.
The hosts carried the momentum into the deciding fifth set and used a 5-1 run to grab an 11-7 lead. Randall and Kreidler each supplied a kill during the stretch, and a key ace by
Caroline Festersen (Omaha, Neb.) forced the Ephs to call a timeout. Watts later chipped in a pair of kills down the stretch, and the Camels secured the 15-9 victory on an attack error. It marked Conn's first win against Williams since 2012.
Conn was strong at the net all match long and held an 11.5-0 advantage in team blocks. Kreidler and
Rae Wartelle (Tacoma, Wash.) tacked on five block assists apiece while
Natasha Shrivastava (San Diego, Calif.) chipped in two. Shrivastava, who was honored prior to the match for notching her 1,000th career assist, led the Camels with 44 assists on the night.
Conn College will next host Amherst College on Saturday, September 30 at 2:00 p.m.
