CLINTON, N.Y. – A late second half goal lifted the Connecticut College men's soccer team to a hard-fought 3-2 win over Hamilton College on Saturday in Clinton, N.Y. With the win, Conn improves to 6-0-2 and 2-0-2 in NESCAC play, while Hamilton falls to 3-4-2 overall and 1-4-1 in conference action.
It was a frenetic first half as the two teams combined for four goals in the opening 16 minutes. Conn (5-0-2, 1-0-2) opened at 6:19 on a goal from Maurice Pigola (Gorlitz, German). Samuel Brockelman (Topsfield, Mass.) played a ball across to Matt Quiros-Newton (Alajuela, Costa Rica) who laid the ball off to Pigola, giving the Camels the 1-0 lead. Hamilton (3-3-2, 1-3-1)responded just over three minutes later on a goal by Ravi Travers.
It did not take long for Conn to retake the lead, just 43 seconds later, Matt Scoffone (Thornton, Pa.) took a shot from outside the box that curled into the top corner to put the Camels back on top 2-1. Again however, the Continentals answered, this time five and half minutes later on an Aedan Burke tally, knotting the game at two. Neither side found the back of the net for the remainder of the half, as it was tied at two at the break.
The second half was much more defensive as neither side wanted to concede the go-ahead goal, as there were just three combined shots in the opening 25 minutes of the second half. Conn finally found the go-ahead marker, as Elliot Spatz (Bellevue, Wash.) connected with Jack Marvel (Marion, Mass.) to put the Camels up 3-2 with 15:45 remaining. Hamilton tried to find a late equalizer, but the Conn defense was up to the task, as the Camels came away with the 3-2 win.
Hamilton outshot Conn 13-7 overall, but each side had six shots on goal, while Conn held a 7-3 advantage on corner kicks.
Peter Silvester (Smiths Parish, Bermuda) picked up the win in goal, making four saves. Scoffone, Pigola, and Marvel all recorded a goal, while Spatz, Brockelman, and Quiros-Newton all added an assist. Spatz led the way with two shots on the afternoon, with one on target.
Kai Haesslein made three saves in goal for Hamilton, earning the loss. Travers and Burke tallied the goals for the Continentals, while Luke O'Dowd and Luke Peplowski added an assist each.
The Camels return home for a big NESCAC showdown as Conn hosts No. 3 Amherst at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon on Freeman Field.
