WEST HARTFORD, Conn – The Connecticut College women's soccer team was firing on all cylinders in the season-opener, picking up a 6-0 road win over the University of Saint Joseph on Thursday night. With the win, the Camels start the year at 1-0 for the seventh consecutive season, while the Blue Jays fall to 1-2.
Conn (1-0) started quickly, recording two shots and two corner kicks in the first two and half minutes, before
Morgan Plouffe (Johnston, R.I) opened the scoring for the Camels at 2:42, with
Mya Johnson (Old Lyme, Conn.) and
Kristyn Moran (Hingham, Mass.) picking up the assists. The University of Saint Joseph (1-2) tried to respond, but
Jamie Scarpantonio (Glastonbury, Conn.) doubled the Camel lead off an assist from
Sarah Hobbs (Kansas City, Mo.) at 16:10.
The Camels continued to put pressure on the Blue Jays back line, when Moran's corner connected with
Lauren Anastos (Hull, Mass.) in the 31
st minute to push the lead to 3-0. Just before halftime,
Zola Alcaro (Norwell, Mass.) notched her first collegiate goal, with
Maddie Lynch (Noank, Conn.) providing the assist, as Conn took a 4-0 advantage into the break.
Conn dominated the first half outshooting USJ 13-0 overall, including a 7-0 advantage with shots on goal. Additionally, the Camels were awarded six corner kicks in the opening 45 minutes, while the Blue Jays did not record any.
Conn continued their strong play early in the second half, as Johnson scored twice in just under nine minutes to extend the lead to 6-0. Johnson's first tally came off an assist from Scarpantonio in the 55
th minute, before Plouffe recorded the assist on Johnson's second goal at 63:33.
The Camels led in every facet of the contest outshooting the Blue Jays 25-0 overall, including a 12-0 mark on shots on goal, while holding a 10-0 advantage on corner kicks.
Sarah Hall (Tualatin, Ore.) got the win between the sticks, playing the first half and facing no shots.
Nici Scola (Braintree, Mass.) came on in the second half, recording 29:44 of action, with
Ella Kahrl (Wellesley, Mass.) amassing 9:46 minutes of work, and
Riley Schlick-Trask (Bradenton, Fla.) finishing out the final five and a half minutes in her collegiate debut.
Johnson paced the Camel attack, recording five points on two goals and one assist, while also finishing with five shots, with three on target. Scarpantonio and Plouffe both added three points on one goal and one assist, while Anastos and Alcaro each added a goal, and Moran recorded two assists.
Conn returns to Freeman Field for the first time in the new season, as the Camels host No. 24 Tufts University in the NESCAC opener at noon on Saturday.
