NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Connecticut College women's ice hockey team hung tough with No.3 Amherst College, but ultimately fell 3-0 on Friday night from Dayton Arena. With the loss, Conn falls 5-4-4 overall and 1-4-2 in NESCAC play, while Amherst improves to 9-1-2 overall and 4-1-2 in conference action.
Amherst (9-1-2, 4-1-2 NESCAC) opened the contest with the first shot, but Devon Galizio (Wayland, Mass.) looked sharp. Conn (5-4-4, 1-4-2 NESCAC) responded with their first shot on goal at 5:38, but Claire Sammons (Naperville, Ill.) effort was turned aside. The Mammoths opened the scoring at 16:22. Galizio stopped the initial shot, but Maggie Groszek followed up the puck, and beat Galizio to put Amherst up 1-0. Neither side found the net, as Amherst led 1-0 after one.
 Amherst opened the second period on the power play, firing off the first four shots, but Galizio and the defense held the Camels at bay. The Camels responded by jumping on the front foot, recording the next three shots, but were unable to beat Natalie Stott. Conn ended the period strong, but still trailed 1-0 heading to the third.
Conn dominated the action in the first five minutes of the frame, but again were unable to tie the score. Galizio continued to be strong in goal, keeping the deficit at one, and with just over three minutes remaining the Camels were awarded a power play. Midway through the power play, Conn pulled Galizio for the extra attacker looking for the tying goal. With the empty net, Amherst scored twice, with 27 seconds and seven seconds remaining respectively, to come away with the 3-0 win.
Amherst outshot Conn 31-23, while the Camels won 38 of 69 face-offs.
Galizio continued her fantastic play in net, finishing with 28 saves on 29 shots. Sammons and Serena Seiple (Wilmette, Ill.) led Conn with four shots on goal, while Sydney Cresta (Swampscott, Mass.). Bridget McGann (West Hartford, Conn.) had a strong two-way game, finishing with four blocked shots, while Kylie McCarthy (Dedham, Mass.) blocked three. Cresta led the way in the face-off circle, winning 14 of 24 draws, while Conn went 4-4 on the penalty kill and 0-4 on the power play.
Stott got the shutout in goal, finishing with 23 saves. Groszek, Mary Thompson, and Rylee Glennon led the Mammoths, as each tallied one goal. Amherst went 0-4 on the power play and 4-4 on the penalty kill.
Conn wraps up the weekend series with Amherst tomorrow afternoon in Dayton Arena, with puck drop scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
