NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Connecticut College women's ice hockey team gave No. 3 Amherst College everything it had, but came up short once again, falling to the visiting Mammoths 2-1 on Saturday afternoon from Dayton Arena. With the loss, Conn falls to 5-5-4 on the year and 1-5-2 in NESCAC play, while Amherst improves to 10-1-2 overall and 5-1-2 in conference action.
Conn (5-5-4, 1-5-2 NESCAC) started quickly jumping out to an early lead. Claire Sammons (Naperville, Ill.) threw a puck on net, and Alana Burm (Hingham, Mass.) punched the puck home to put the Camels up 1-0 at 2:50. Amherst (10-1-2, 5-1-2 NESCAC) responded just a minute and a half later on a tally from Marie-Eve Marleau to tie the game at one. At 5:43, the Mammoths jumped in front on a goal from Arina Baxter, as Amherst took the 2-1 lead after one.
Amherst fired off the first shot in the middle frame, but after allowing two early goals, Devon Galizio (Wayland, Mass.) settled in with a nice save. Conn answered with the next two attempts, but both Abby Munger (Trinity, Fla.) and Kylie McCarthy (Dedham, Mass.) had their efforts blocked. The Mammoths dominated play for much of the second period, but Galizio kept the Camels in it, as Conn trailed 2-1 heading to the third.
In the third period, Conn came out strong looking to tie the game. Within the first two minutes, the Camels had three shots on goal, but Natalie Stott kept Amherst in front. Conn continued to push for the equalizer, but were stifled by the Mammoths. With just under two minutes remaining, Galizio made her way to the bench for the extra attacker. With the extra attacker on the ice, the Camels threw everything they could at Stott, but ran out of time, falling 2-1.
Amherst outshot Conn 30-25, while holding a 27-20 edge on face-off wins.
Galizio got another start in goal, finishing with 28 saves on 30 shots. Burm tallied the lone Camels goal, while Sammons picked up the assist. Sydney Frank (Stillwater, N.Y.) led the way with six shots on goal, while Burm added five. Conn blocked 11 shots on the afternoon, led by Kate Hagness (Madison, Conn.) and Galen Kilfeather (Wyndmoor, Pa.)Â with two each. Sammons won nine of 21 face-offs, while Conn went 0-1 on the power play and 2-2 on the penalty kill.
Stott got the start in net, making 24 saves on 25 shots. Five Mammoths tallied one point, led by Baxter and Marleau who both notched a goal. Amherst finished the contest 0-2 on the power play and 1-1 on the penalty kill.
Conn continues their homestand on Tuesday afternoon, as the Camels host Johnson and Wales at 4:00 p.m. in Dayton Arena.
