Chesner Scores as Women's Hockey Skates to 1-1 Tie With JWU

NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Connecticut College women's ice hockey team outshot visiting Johnson and Wales 42-13, but the teams skated to a 1-1 tie on Tuesday afternoon from Dayton Arena. With the tie, Conn moves to 5-5-5 on the year, while Johnson and Wales moves to 4-12-1.

Conn (5-5-5) came out flying, attempting the first seven shots of the contest, in the opening six minutes. Johnson and Wales (4-12-1), responded with their first shot at 6:45, but Jillian Wexler (Plainsboro, N.J.)was ready. The Camels controlled play for much of the opening period, but the game remained tied after one.

Conn continued their strong play to open the middle frame, hemming JWU in the defensive zone. The Camels final opened the scoring at 7:41, when Kiley Smith (Marion, Mass.) fed a pass to the slot, connecting with Casey Chesner (Great Falls, Va.), who one-timed the shot through Leah White to make it 1-0. Conn ended the period strong, holding the Wildcats to just one shot, but only led 1-0 heading to the third.

Once again the Camels started quickly, forcing seven saves from White in the opening five and a half minutes. Midway through the period, with the teams playing four-on-four, Zoe Tow got a breakaway, beating Wexler, who got a glove on it, to tie the game at one at 10:57. Conn pushed for a winner late in regulation, but was unable to beat White as the game headed to overtime tied at one.

In the extra frame, the Wildcats got the first chance, but Wexler turned it aside. Conn responded looking to get the extra point, but neither goalie broke, as the teams settled for the 1-1 tie.

Conn dominated Johnson and Wales, outshooting the Wildcats 42-13, while winning 31 of 54 draws.

Wexler got the start in goal, finishing with 12 saves on 13 shots. Chesner tallied the lone goal, while Smith added the only assist. Chesner and Claire Sammons led the way with six shots on goal, while Alana Burm (Hingham, Mass.) and Serena Seiple (Wilmette, Ill.) both added five. Sammons and Sydney Cresta (Swampscott, Mass.) both won 10 face-offs, while Conn went 1-1 on the penalty kill and 0-4 on the power play.

White got the start in goal, stopping 41 of 42 shots. Tow tallied the lone Wildcats goal, while Johnson and Wales went 0-1 on the power play and 4-4 on the penalty kill.

Conn returns to conference action on Friday night, as the Camels host No. 13 Trinity at 7:00 p.m. in Dayton Arena.
