NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Connecticut College women's ice hockey team hung tough with visiting No. 13 Trinity College, falling to the Bantams 1-0 on Friday night from Dayton Arena. With the loss, Conn falls to 5-6-5 on the year and 1-6-2 in NESCAC play, while Trinity improves to 9-3-2 overall and 2-3-2 in conference action.
Trinity (9-3-2, 2-3-2 NESCAC) opened the game with four of the first five shots, before Conn (5-6-5, 1-6-2 NESCAC) responded with three straight. Midway through the opening frame, Jenny Guider poked a puck free, and scored on the breakaway to give Trinity the 1-0 lead at 12:14. The teams traded chances for the remainder of the period, but the Bantams led 1-0 after one.
The second period and much of the third period, played out like the end of the first. Both teams generated opportunities, but both Devon Galizio (Wayland, Mass.) and Hannah Leclair stood strong. Conn generated a few power plays over the final two periods, but again could not beat Leclair.
With time winding down, Conn was awarded a power play with just under two and a half minutes remaining. On the ensuing advantage, Galizio made her way to the bench for the extra attacker, as the Camels threw everything at the Bantams. With just over a minute left, Kiley Smith (Marion, Mass.) let a shot go from the point that Abby Munger (Trinity, Fla.) tipped. The shot glanced off the crossbar, falling straight down, seeming to cross the line, but was waved off by the officials. Time ran out on the Camels, as Conn fell 1-0.
Trinity outshot Conn 19-18, while winning 28 of 47 draws.
Galizio got the start in goal, finishing with 18 saves on 19 shots. Alana Burm (Hingham, Mass.) and Claire Sammons (Naperville, Ill.) led the way with three shots on goal. Charlotte Harris (Ystrad Mynach, Wales) won six of 10 face-offs, while Conn went 2-2 on the penalty kill and 0-4 on the power play.
Leclair got the nod in net, stopping all 18 shots faced. Guider tallied the lone goal of the contest, while the Bantams went 0-2 on the power play and 4-4 on the penalty kill.
Conn wraps up the weekend series with the Bantams tomorrow in Dayton Arena with puck drop scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
