MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Connecticut College men's ice hockey team fell on the road, dropping a 4-1 decision to Wesleyan University on Friday night from Spurrier-Snyder Rink. With the loss, Conn falls to 5-7-2 overall and 3-6-0 in NESCAC play, while Wesleyan improves to 4-9-1 on the year and 3-5-1 in conference action
Wesleyan (4-9-1, 3-5-1 NESCAC) started quickly, jumping out to an early 1-0 lead. Just 1:24 into the contest, Danny Judge beat Will McEvoy (Ottawa, Ontario) to put the Cardinals in front. 12 minutes later Conn (5-7-2, 3-6-0) responded on the power play. Six seconds into the man advantage Quinn Kennedy (Silver Spring, Md.) tied the game at one at 13:35, on assists from Pete Stanger (Bathurst, New Brunswick) and John Russo (South Windsor, Conn). Neither side found the net for the rest of the period, as the squads were tied at one, after one.
The Cardinals started fast again in the second period. After earning an early power play, Owen Sweet found the net just 52 seconds into the frame to give Wesleyan a 2-1 lead. With just under six minutes left in the period, Kyle Anderson scored to extend the Cardinal advantage to 3-1, an edge they took into the third period.
Conn started the final period strong looking to cut into the deficit, but the Camels were unable to beat Erik Voloshin. Conn continued to push for a goal, but once again with just under six minutes left in regulation, Anderson tallied his second goal of the night, to push the lead to 4-1. The Camels were unable to generate anything over the final six minutes, falling 4-1.
Conn outshot Wesleyan 31-25, while holding a slim 35-32 edge on face-off wins.
McEvoy got the start in goal, finishing with 21 saves. Kennedy tallied the lone goal, while Russo and Stanger both notched one assist. Michael DiMascolo (Cranston, R.I.) and Rocco Testa-Basi (Holland Patent, N.Y.) both recorded four shots on goal, while the Camels blocked eight shots. Russo, Seth Stadheim (Lyme, N.H.), and Shane Zarcone (Huntington, N.Y.) all won nine draws, while the Camels went 1-3 on the power play and 2-3 on the penalty kill.
Volsohin got the nod in net, stopping 30 shots. Anderson led the way with three points on two goals and one assist, while Judge added two on one goal and one assist. Wesleyan finished the game 1-3 on the power play and 2-3 on the penalty kill.
Conn finally wraps up its long road trip, as the Camels head to Hartford, Conn. to take on No. 10 Trinity tomorrow afternoon at 4:00 p.m.
