Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Stadheim Scores Twice as Men's Hockey Earns First Season Sweep of Williams in Program History

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Seth Stadheim (Lyme, N.H.) tallied two goals, as the Connecticut College men's ice hockey team defeated visiting Williams College 5-1 on Saturday from Dayton Arena for the program's first ever season sweep of the Ephs. With the win, Conn improves to 7-8-2 overall and 5-7-0 in NESCAC play, while Williams falls to 6-12-1 on the year and 3-9-1 in conference action.

It was a slow start for both teams, as the squads opened the contest feeling each other, with just three combined shots in the first five minutes. Conn (7-8-2, 5-7-0 NESCAC) got the first opportunity with a power play at the five minute mark. On the advantage, the Camels recorded three shots, but were unable to open the scoring. Williams (6-12-1, 3-9-1 NESCAC) responded with a shot on goal, but the game remained scoreless after one.

Conn opened the scoring early in the middle frame on a tally from Quinn Kennedy (Silver Spring, Md.) at 1:28. After Steven Ardagna (Roswell, Ga.) broke his stick on the shot, the puck rolled to Kennedy behind the net, where he banked it in off the back of Ephs goaltender Cal Sandquist to put the Camels up 1-0 with Ardagna and Reid Shafer (Coppell, Texas) earned the assists. Midway through the period, Conn was awarded another power play, and this time made no mistake. Kennedy and Peter Stanger (Bathurst, New Brunswick) played catch at the point, before Stanger fed it to Jack Luca (Milton, Mass.) who fired it through the five-hole of Sandquist to make it 2-0 at 10:52.

Following the second Camels goal, Williams was awarded three power plays, resulting in an extended advantage of over five minutes. With the final penalty winding down, John Russo (South Windsor, Conn.) and Stadheim knocked a puck loose for a shorthanded 2-on-1. Russo passed to Stadheim who walked in and fired past Sandquist to make it 3-0 at 16:52. Late in the period, the Ephs got a goal back on a tally from Brady Welsch, but Conn led 3-1 heading to the third.

Williams started the third period strong, looking to cut the deficit, but Sean Dynan (Reading, Mass.) was strong in net. At 4:40, Ardagna took a shot from the point that deflected off a Rocco Testa-Basi (Holland Patent, N.Y.) before being redirected into the net by Stadheim, making it 4-1. The Ephs tried to get back into the game, but Dynan and the Camels held firm. With just under three minutes remaining, the Ephs pulled the goalie for the extra attacker. With the net empty Devan Newhook (St. John's, Newfoundland) played a puck to Testa-Basi who slotted it into the empty cage to give the Camels the 5-1 victory.

Conn outshot Williams 27-23, while winning 27 of 52 draws.

Dynan was fantastic in goal, finishing with 22 saves. Four Camels tallied two points, with Stadheim recording two goals, Ardagna notching two assists, and Testa-Basi and Kennedy adding a goal and an assist each. Luca recorded a goal, while Newhook, Russo, Stanger, and Shafer all added one assist. Testa-Basi recorded five shots on goal, while Kei Yasuda (Nagoya, Japan) won 13 of 16 face-offs. Conn finished 1-2 on the power play and 4-4 on the penalty, adding a shorthanded goal.

Sandquist got the start in goal, stopping 22 shots. Welsch recorded the only goal, while Trevor O'Brein added an assist. Williams finished the afternoon 0-4 on the power play and 1-2 on the penalty kill.

Conn heads back out on the road, as the Camels travel to Worcester, Mass. to take on Assumption University on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m.
