NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Connecticut College women's ice hockey team exploded for three goals in each the second and third periods to come away with a 6-0 win over visiting Nichols College on Tuesday night from Dayton Arena. With the win, Conn improves to 7-8-5, while Nichols falls to 7-13-0.
Nichols (7-13-0) opened the game, recording the first shot on goal 2:22 into the contest, but Devon Galizio (Wayland, Mass.) made the early save. Conn (7-8-5) responded with the next five shots on goal, but were turned away by AnaMary Pulgar. The Camels finished the opening period strong, but the teams were scoreless after one.
In the middle frame Conn came out firing on all cylinders, dominating the Bison. However, it was not until 12:34 that the Camels opened the scoring. Kiley Smith (Humble, Texas) took a shot from the point that Pulgar stopped, but the rebound fell right to Sydney Frank (Stillwater, N.Y.), who tapped the puck home to make it 1-0, with Serena Seiple (Wilmette, Ill.) picking up the secondary assist.Â
With just under a minute and a half left, the Camels doubled their lead on a power play marker from Abby Munger (Trinity, Fla.). Alana Burm (Hingham, Mass.) had her initial shot stopped but Munger poked in the rebound, as Claire Sammons (Naperville, Ill.) also recorded an assist. With 24 seconds remaining, Conn made it 3-0, after a nice passing play between Sydney Cresta (Swampscott, Mass.) and Charlotte Harris (Ystrad Mynach, Wales). Harris' shot was stopped, but Casey Godfrey (Redondo Beach, Calif.) put the puck in, as the Camels led 3-0 heading to the third.
At 6:22, Conn extended the lead further. Munger passed across the blueline to Kylie McCarthy (Dedham, Mass.) who fired a shot that Casey Chesner (Great Falls, Va.) tipped home to make it 4-0. With 2:20 remaining, the Camels converted on another power play, as Miyu Miyazaki (Chiba, Japan) circled behind the net, passing to Burm who fired the puck in making it 5-0. Just 29 seconds later, Burm tallied her second goal off an assist from McCarthy as Conn came away with the 6-0 win.
Conn outshot Nichols 49-7, while winning 30 of 49 draws.
Galizio recorded her fourth shutout of the year, making seven saves. Burm led the way with three points on two goals and one assist, while McCarthy tallied two assists, and Munger notched a goal and an assist, with nine other Camels adding one point. Sammons led the way with seven shots on goal, while Chesner and Ashley Engle (Basking Ridge, N.J.) added five each. Cresta and Miyazaki both won 10 faceoffs, while Conn went 2-6 on the power play and did not commit a penalty.
Pulgar got the start in goal, making 41 saves on 45 shots, before being replaced by Paige Almon with just over five minutes remaining, making two saves. Grace Wiggett and Rhea Bullens both recorded two shots on goal, while going 4-6 on the penalty kill.
Conn has a week off before returning to action on Feb. 10, as the Camels travel to Clinton, N.Y. to take on No. 8 Hamilton College.
