BOSTON, Mass. – Andrew Eberling's (Mount Laurel, N.J.) goal in the seventh round of the shootout lifted the Connecticut College men's ice hockey team past Suffolk University 1-1, 3-2 in the shootout, in the semifinals of the 58th Annual Codfish Bowl Tournament. With the tie, Conn moves to 3-5-2 on the year, while Suffolk falls to 2-10-2.
Conn (3-5-2) got off to a strong start, firing off eight of the first nine shots of the contest, but were unable to open the scoring. Suffolk (2-10-2) responded with back-to-back shots, but Sean Dynan (Reading, Mass.) kept the Rams at bay. The Camels got the first power play of the afternoon with seven and a half minutes remaining, but were unable to find the net, as the game was scoreless after one.
Suffolk came out fast to start the second period, but the game remained scoreless. After the teams traded chances throughout much of the frame, the Rams finally opened the scoring, as Ryan Webb beat Dynan to put Suffolk up 1-0 at 14:28. Conn ended the period on the power play, but could not tie the game, as the Camels headed to the third period down 1-0.
Conn pushed in the third period, looking to find the equalizer, but the Camels continued to be stymied by CJ Hapward. With just under four minutes remaining, Conn went shorthanded, but killed off the ensuing penalty, keeping the comeback hopes alive. With the net empty and the extra attacker out, Rocco Testa-Basi (Holland Patent, N.Y.) fired a puck across-ice to Cole Eichler (King, Ontario), who ripped the puck into the net, tying the game at one, with 25 seconds left in regulation. The Camels had the last chance in regulation for the winning goal, but came up empty as the game headed to overtime.
Midway through the extra session, the Camels were awarded a power play, looking for the game winner. On the ensuing man-advantage, Steven Ardagna (Roswell, Ga.) hit the post, but Conn was unable to take advantage, as the game headed to the shootout.
In the shootout, Suffolk scored their first two attempts, before Reid Shafer (Coppell, Texas) converted in the third round to send the contest to extra shots. After seven straight saves from both goalies, Eberling cut down the near side, before beating Hapward to the far post, and advancing the Camels.
Conn outshot Suffolk 41-26, while winning 38 of 72 draws.
Dynan got the start in goal, finishing with 25 saves. Eichler tallied the lone goal, while Testa-Basi and Shafer added the assists. Eberling and Jack Luca (Milton, Mass.) led the way with six shots on goal each. Seth Stadheim (Lyme, N.H.) won 13 of 20 face-offs, while Conn went 4-4 on the penalty kill and 0-3 on the power play.
