Miyazaki Scores Twice in Women's Hockey's 3-3 Tie at Bowdoin

BRUNSWICK, Maine - Miyu Miyazaki (Chiba, Japan) tallied two goals, as the Connecticut College women's ice hockey team, fought for a 3-3 tie against host Bowdoin College on Friday night from the Sidney J. Watson Arena in Brunswick, Maine. With the tie, Conn moves to 5-3-3 overall and 1-3-1 in NESCAC play, while Bowdoin moves to 6-5-1 and 2-2-1 in conference play.

Conn (5-3-3, 1-3-1) opened the scoring just under seven minutes into the contest. Galen Kilfeather (Wyndmoor, Pa.) cleared the puck out of the defensive zone to Alana Burm (Hingham, Mass.) who cut into the zone, firing a pass to Miyazaki, who roofed the shot, giving the Camels a 1-0 lead at 6:58. Bowdoin (6-5-1, 2-2-1) responded four minutes later when Anyi Sun found the back of the net at 10:53 to tie the game at one. Neither side found the net for the remainder of the period, as the game was tied at one, after one.

The Polar Bears started the second period quickly, taking their first lead of the night, just a minute into the frame, on a tally from Meghan Montanaro. Conn answered four minutes later, when Serena Seiple (Wilmette, Ill.) picked up a loose puck at the top of the circle, firing a shot past Sarah Peterson to tie the game at two. It did not take long for the Camels to jump back in front. Just 37 seconds after tying the game, Miyazaki notched her second goal of the contest, off an assist from Sydney Cresta (Swampscott, Mass.) to put Conn in front 3-2, a lead they took heading to the third period.

Both teams' defenses hunkered down in the third period, as the game remained 3-2, until late in the period. However, with just over three minutes left, the Polar Bears won an offensive zone draw, as Kathryn Kester fired a shot past Devon Galizio (Wayland, Mass.) to tie the game at three with 2:58 left. Neither side found a winner at the end of regulation, as the game headed to overtime.

Bowdoin had the first look at the winner in the extra frame, as Sun was fed in the slot, but Galizio made the save. Just seconds later after the ensuing face-off, Burm was sprung on a breakaway, but she was unable to find the net for the Camels. With just over two minutes left, Galizio once again came up with a huge stop, this time on Kester. Both goalies finished strong, as the game ended in a 3-3 tie.

Bowdoin outshot Conn 35-29, while winning 23 of 43 draws.

Galizio continued her strong run of play in net, finishing with 32 saves on 35 shots. Miyazaki led the Camels with two goals, while Seiple recorded one goal, and Burm, Cresta, and Kilfeather all added one assist. Claire Sammons (Naperville, Ill.) paced the games with five shots on goal, while Cresta won 11 of 18 face-offs. Conn finished 0-1 on the power play and 1-2 on the penalty kill.

Peterson got the start in goal, stopping 26 of 29 shots. Six Polar Bears tallied one point, led by Kester, Montanaro, and Sun who all tallied on goal. Bowdoin finished 1-2 on the power play and 1-1 on the penalty kill.

Conn wraps up the weekend series with the Polar Bears tomorrow afternoon, with puck drop scheduled for 3:00 p.m. in Brunswick, Maine.
