Field Hockey Knocks Off No. 22 Hamilton

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College field hockey team knocked off No. 22 Hamilton College by a 2-1 final on Saturday afternoon in a NESCAC match-up at Silfen Field.

The Camels scored a pair of first-half goals and made the margin stand, securing their second conference win of the season. Bridget McGann (West Hartford, Conn.) and Kellyn Scheel (Palo Alto, Calif.) netted goals to give Conn a 2-0 advantage, and goalie Liz Winemaster (Lake Forest, Ill.) protected the lead with seven saves.

Conn's third win a row—and first against Hamilton since 2017—moved the Camels into seventh place in the NESCAC standings. The Camels have now defeated ranked opponents in each of the last two seasons.

Conn managed only one shot in the opening quarter but made it count. Katie Dolan (Westminster, Mass.) fed a ball into the middle of the scoring area for McGann, who swept a backhanded shot into the cage for her team-leading eighth goal of the season.

The Camels added their second goal with 5:46 left in the half on their first penalty corner of the contest. Sadie Gearan (Lynnfield, Mass.) received the insert at the top of the scoring area and sent a hit to the right post, where Scheel was waiting to redirect the ball into the goal for her third tally of the year.

Trailing 2-0 at the break, Hamilton got on the scoreboard just 5:45 into the second half off a penalty corner. Lydon Kelley drove the end line and centered a pass to Lilly Truchon, who batted it out of midair to cut the deficit in half.

The Continentals produced several other scoring chances in the second half, but Winemaster was up to the task each time. Conn nearly added an insurance goal in the fourth, but a defensive save by a Hamilton defender kept it a one-score game.

Hamilton pulled its goalie for the final 2:45 but couldn't net the equalizer. In the final minute, Holly Levasseur (Byfield, Mass.) broke up one last push by the Continentals, and Gearan dribbled out the clock in the corner as the Conn sideline erupted into celebration.

Conn (5-5 overall, 2-4 NESCAC) will next host Trinity College on Tuesday, October 15 at 7:00 p.m.
