Field Hockey Stays Hot With Win Over Trinity

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College field hockey team held off a late comeback by Trinity College to secure a 3-2 NESCAC victory on a chilly Tuesday night at Silfen Field.

Bridget McGann (West Hartford, Conn.) scored a pair of goals while Bridget Mason (East Greenwich, R.I.) added the other, leading the Camels to their first win over the Bantams since 2005. Conn extended its winning streak to four games—its longest since 2010—and moved into a tie for fifth place in the NESCAC standings. Goalie Liz Winemaster (Lake Forest, Ill.) finished with four saves on the night.

The Camels built a 3-0 lead over the first three quarters, only to see the Bantams come storming back in the fourth. Julia Lambert and Izzy Deveney each netted goals in the final stanza, but the Camels protected the one-goal margin for the final 8:35 to close out the win.

All three Conn goals came on penalty corners, the first of which came less than five minutes into the contest. After inserting the ball into play, Mason took up residence at the near post and punched one in for her second goal of the season.

The Camels nursed the 1-0 advantage through the rest of the half. In the third quarter, McGann gave Conn some breathing room with her first tally of the night. Rowan Galanis (Ipswich, Mass.) received the insert and put a pass to the front of the goal. The ball slipped past Trinity goalie Sydney Korkosz and found the stick of McGann, who deposited it into the cage for the 2-0 lead.

McGann added her team-leading 10th goal of the year with 4:09 left in the period. Off the insert, Sadie Gearan (Lynnfield, Mass.) ripped a shot on goal that was stopped by Korkosz. However, McGann was once again in the right spot at the right time, poking home the rebound to extend the margin to 3-0.

The Bantams found life just over three minutes into the fourth, as Lambert unleashed a shot from the top of the scoring area that found its way through traffic and past Winemaster. Four minutes later, a penalty stroke was awarded on a shot by Tatum Stickney, and Deveney converted the attempt to draw Trinity to within 3-2.

The Bantams (4-7 overall, 0-7 NESCAC) kept pressing for the equalizer but were denied by the Camels at every turn. Conn didn't allow a shot after the penalty stroke and nearly added another goal in the final minutes.

The Camels finished with a 14-12 edge in total shots and a 7-3 advantage in penalty corners. In addition to Winemaster's four saves, Gearan added a defensive save in the first quarter.

Conn (6-5 overall, 3-4 NESCAC) will next host Bates College on Saturday, October 19 at 11:00 a.m.
