NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College men's soccer team battled tough against visiting Hamilton College, earning a 0-0 draw against the Continentals on Saturday from Freeman Field. With the draw, Conn moves to 5-1-4 on the year and 2-1-4 in conference action, while Hamilton moves to 5-4-3 overall and 3-3-2 in conference play.
Conn opened the contest with the first shot just 3:24 into the match. Matt Scoffone (Thornton, Pa.) let the shot go, but Finn Wheeler made the save. Five minutes later, Hamilton answered with their first shot, as Jude Rouhana forced a save from Peter Silvester (Smiths Parish, Bermuda).
Marco Perugini (Medway, Mass.) forced a save at 13:25, before Elliot Spatz (Bellevue, Wash.) had the best chance of the half at 17:09. Spatz found himself in open space in front of goal, firing on the cage, but Wheeler came up with a massive save for the Continentals. The Camels had the last look at goal in the half, as Scoffone was turned aside again as the game was scoreless at the break.
Both defenses upped their game in the second half, limiting chances on both ends. Conn had another good look to open the scoring as a ball was played across goal, looking for Gavin Mpiana (Cape Town, South Africa) who just missed getting a touch and redirecting the ball into the net.
With just over 18 minutes remaining, Hamilton had their best look to break the deadlock, as Jameson Mannix was played in on goal, but Silvester came up with a fantastic save to tip the ball over the crossbar. With time running down, Conn increased the tempo trying to find a winner, and almost found it in the dying seconds, as Matt Quiros-Newton (Alajuela, Costa Rica) tried to cross the ball into the box, but the Continentals came up with one more stop, as Conn had to settle for the 0-0 final.
Both teams recorded seven total shots, with Conn holding a 4-3 edge on shots on target and a 4-1 advantage on corner kicks.
Silvester notched his seventh clean sheet of the season, recording three saves. Scoffone paced the Camels with two shots on goal, while Perugini and Spatz both added one.
Wheeler made four saves in goal for Hamilton, as three different Continentals recorded one shot on target.
Conn heads back on the road on Tuesday, making the short trek down Mohegan Ave. to take on neighboring Coast Guard at 6:00 p.m.
