Strong First Half Pushes Field Hockey Past Springfield

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College field hockey team scored a season-high four goals in the first half of a 4-1 victory over Springfield College on Wednesday night in non-conference action at Silfen Field.

Bridget McGann (West Hartford, Conn.) led the way with a pair of goals and an assist for the Camels, and Elizabeth Bonner (Westfield, N.J.) and Bridget Mason (East Greenwich, R.I.) also added tallies. Hailey Gaydos scored the lone goal for Springfield (3-7 overall).

After denying a pair of Springfield penalty corners in the opening minute, the Camels settled down and put a goal on the scoreboard just 2:39 into the contest. McGann had the ball in front of the goal and slipped a pass through the back line to Bonner at the post for the finish.

Just over three minutes later, Maddie Mason (Brentwood, N.H.) found McGann in the center of the scoring area to make it a 2-0 game. McGann brought the ball to her backhand side before ripping a shot inside the right post.

The Pride answered back with 36 seconds left in the first quarter. A quick restart and pass by Emma McLaughlin led to a one-on-one chance for Gaydos, who slipped a shot under a sliding Liz Winemaster (Lake Forest, Ill.) to cut the deficit in half.

In the second period, Conn earned its first penalty corner of the game and promptly took advantage. After a shot by McGann was denied by goalie Kaitlyn Parent, Maddie Mason directed the rebound to Bridget Mason at the back post for the senior's first goal of the season.

McGann tacked on her team-leading seventh marker less than a minute later. The Camels once again cashed in on a penalty corner, as McGann got a stick on a loose ball in front of the net and scored through traffic.

Conn put 10 shots on goal in the second half but couldn't add to the lead, as goalie Neilee Hess came off the bench to relieve Parent and finished with 11 saves. The Camels held a 21-9 advantage in total shots and a 7-6 edge in penalty corners. Winemaster and Sophie Moniz (Alexandria, Va.) split time in the cage and combined for three saves.

Conn (3-5 overall) will next host Eastern Connecticut State University on Tuesday, October 8 at 4:00 p.m.
