NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College field hockey team turned in a dominant performance against Eastern Connecticut State University on Tuesday evening, cruising to a 6-0 victory in non-conference action at Silfen Field.
The Camels held a 25-2 edge in total shots as five players found the scoring column.
Hannah Webster (Attleboro, Mass.) netted the game-winning goal,
Kellyn Scheel (Palo Alto, Calif.) and
Reese Ziegler (Charlotte, N.C.) each recorded their first collegiate tallies, and
Elizabeth Bonner (Westfield, N.J.) and
Rowan Galanis (Ipswich, Mass.) notched their third goals of the season.
Conn picked up its sixth-straight win in the series. The Camels have shut out Eastern (4-5 overall) in the last four meetings, outscoring the Warriors by a 16-0 margin.
Conn wasted little time taking control, scoring less than three minutes into the contest off the stick of Webster.
Bridget McGann (West Hartford, Conn.) had possession with her back to the goal and sent a backhanded pass to Webster at the post. The senior quickly swept the ball over the goal line for her first marker of the season, as well as the first game winner of her career.
The Camels carried the 1-0 advantage into the second quarter but added a pair of scores before the break. Scheel scored off a loose ball with 11:27 to go in the half, and Bonner stuffed home a rebound with 1:22 left to push the lead to 3-0 at intermission.
Scheel, who scored her first career goal in the opening half, didn't have to wait long for her second. The Camels executed a penalty corner with precision, connecting on three passes before Scheel deposited a one-timer through traffic off an assist from
Chloe Therrien (Boxford, Mass.).
Conn added a pair of insurance goals in the fourth quarter to sew up the win. Ziegler was in the right spot at the right time, cleaning up a ricochet in front of the cage for her first career goal with 11:54 remaining. Galanis later tacked on the final tally with 9:11 to play, popping a shot over the Eastern goalie with a backhanded flip.
Sophie Moniz (Alexandria, Va.) and
Sadie Abuhaidar (Park City, Utah) combined for the shutout in goal. Moniz finished with a pair of saves in the first half while Abuhaidar didn't face a shot in the second.
Conn (4-5 overall) will next host No. 22 Hamilton College on Saturday, October 12 at 11:00 a.m.
