NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College field hockey team dropped its regular season finale against No. 10 Wesleyan University by a 5-1 final on Tuesday evening at Silfen Field.
The Cardinals scored three goals in the first half—including two off the stick of Kenzie Kelly—and never trailed. Sydney Cameron added a goal and an assist as Wesleyan improved to 11-4 overall (6-4 NESCAC) and secured the fourth seed in the upcoming NESCAC Championship.
Margaret Sadak (Glastonbury, Conn.) scored the lone goal for the Camels, who will learn their postseason fate by the end of the night. Conn is one of five teams vying for the remaining three spots in the NESCAC Championship. Following the conclusion of tonight's slate, the conference will announce the tournament field on NESCAC.com.
Wesleyan got on the scoreboard just over nine minutes into the game on a penalty stroke by Kelly. Five minutes later, Cameron scored off a penalty corner to put the Cardinals up 2-0 after one.
Kelly tacked on her second goal before the halftime intermission. The Cardinals led 3-0 at the break and didn't allow a shot in the first half.
Conn opened the second half by earning a corner and putting a shot on goal, but goalie Audrey Pace was there to make the stop. In the fourth quarter, Wesleyan added to the margin on another penalty corner tally, this time by Kenzie Mauro.
The Camels finally broke through with just over five minutes remaining in the game off a penalty corner of their own. After the initial shot from the point was deflected,
Bridget Mason (East Greenwich, R.I.) slipped a pass along the goal line that was punched in by Sadak for her first career goal.
The Cardinals added the final marker with 2:04 left on a blast by Leila Feldman. Wesleyan finished with a 27-7 edge in total shots and a 13-3 advantage in penalty corners.
Conn goalie
Liz Winemaster (Lake Forest, Ill.) played the entire game and finished with 10 saves.
UPDATE: The Camels have qualified for the NESCAC Championship as the seventh seed and will play at second-seeded Williams College on Saturday, November 2 at 1 p.m.
