Mastrullo's Second Half Strike Stuns No. 4 Wesleyan as Women's Soccer Earns Crucial Draw

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Mae Mastrullo (Hudson, Mass.) scored with under 15 minutes remaining, as the Connecticut College women's soccer team earned a crucial 1-1 draw with No. 4 Wesleyan on Tuesday night from Silfen Field. With the draw, Conn moves to 5-8-2 on the year and 2-6-2 in NESCAC play, while Wesleyan moves to 12-0-3 overall and 7-0-3 in conference play.

Wesleyan came out flying to start the contest, putting four shots on target in the opening 20 minutes, but Ella Kahrl (Wellesley, Mass.) was up to the challenge. Conn tried to grow into the contest, but the Cardinals stifling defense limited any opportunities for the Camels.

With just over eight and a half minutes remaining in the opening half, Wesleyan earned a corner. On the ensuing kick, Lily Jebejian crossed the ball into the box, connecting with the head of Waverly Meyers, finding Meredith Feiner at the near post, who tapped it in to make it 1-0. Conn tried to generate some momentum before the break, but trailed 1-0 at the half.

Wesleyan continued their strong play, putting pressure on the Camels backline, but Conn's defense held strong keeping the deficit at one. Conn eventually broke through the Cardinals defense with 14 and a half minutes to play. Blessing Kieh (Monrovia, Liberia) worked down the far side, playing a ball into the box, finding Mastrullo who did just enough to get the ball across the line, tying the game. With the goal, Conn became the first team to score on Wesleyan since Sept. 28.

Both teams tried to find a winner down the stretch, but neither side was able to, as the squads settled for the 1-1 draw.

Wesleyan outshot Conn 17-1 overall, including 9-1 on shots on target, holding a 5-2 advantage on corner kicks.

Kahrl bounced back with a strong game in goal, recording eight saves. Mastrullo tallied the only Camels goal on the lone shot, while Kieh picked up the assist.

Molly Brumbach got the start in goal, making no saves. Feiner tallied the lone Cardinal goal, with both Jebejian and Meyers picking up an assist.

Conn will wait to see their fate, to see if they earn a spot in the NESCAC Tournament, which begins on Saturday, with the final pairings yet to be determined.
