BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Connecticut College women's volleyball team dropped a 3-0 final to Bowdoin College on Friday night at Morrell Gym.
The Polar Bears won by set scores of 27-25, 25-20 and 25-21 to improve to 13-8 overall (4-5 NESCAC). Skye LaMendola paced Bowdoin with 10 kills and nine digs while Alison Smith chipped in eight kills.
Mila Chan (San Francisco, Calif.) and
Rae Wartelle (Tacoma, Wash.) set the tone for Conn, finishing with 10 and eight kills, respectively.
Josie Kelly (Solana Beach, Calif.) handed out 31 assists while
Taylor Merrifield (Honolulu, Hawaii) contributed a match-high 27 digs on the defensive end.
Conn led for most of the opening set, only to see Bowdoin fight back at the finish. The Polar Bears trailed 21-17 and later fended off three set points before rallying for the final three points, two of which came off kills by Smith.
A 7-0 run by the Polar Bears yielded a 10-3 lead in the second set. Although the Camels cut the deficit to 11-9 on Chan's serve, Bowdoin never surrendered the advantage en route to the 2-0 lead.
The Camels kept it close in the final set but couldn't extend the match. Bowdoin won four of the final six points to sew up the victory, with kills by Corrine Lamond to bookend the stretch.
Bowdoin committed only seven errors in the contest and hit .280 as a team. Conn held a 38-37 edge in total kills but had 23 errors, 10 of which came via Polar Bear blocks.
Conn (15-7 overall, 3-6 NESCAC) wraps up regular season play at Colby College on Saturday, November 2 at 1:00 p.m.
