Scardigno Leads Men's XC at NCAA Mideast Regional

WATERFORD, Conn. – The Connecticut College men's cross country team finished 11th out of 24 teams at the 2024 NCAA Mideast Regional on Saturday afternoon at Harkness Memorial State Park.

Matt Scardigno (Port Washington, N.Y.) recorded the fastest 8k time of his career to lead the Camels. He finished 11th overall with a time of 24:50.9, securing all-region honors for the first time in his career. 

RPI turned in a dominant performance to win the team title. The Engineers placed five runners in the top-9 and finished with a score of 29 points, well ahead of runner-up Williams (76). Middlebury (118), Wesleyan (130) and Amherst (137) rounded out the top-5 in the team standings. Nathan Tassey from Roger Williams took home medalist honors, finishing first in the field of 172 runners with a time of 24:03.4. 

Ellis Iurilli-Hough (Melrose, Mass.) was the next Conn runner across the finish, placing 48th in 26:11.7. Anthony Belford (Bay Shore, N.Y.) finished 63rd in 26:43.5 while Josh Barzilai (Princeton, N.J.) took 96th in 27:37.0, and Alex Santos Acosta (West Hempstead, N.Y.) rounded out the scoring in 98th at 27:41.8. 

Zach Stoddard (Pomfret Center, Conn.) and Brendan Capodanno (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) filled out Conn's top-7. Stoddard completed the 8k course in 28:25.0 to finish 122nd while Capodanno checked in at 28:37.4 to place 124th.

Scardigno figures to be in good standing to qualify as an individual for the 2024 NCAA DIII Championship on November 23 in Terre Haute, Ind. The official selections will be announced on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. on NCAA.com.
