BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Connecticut College men's cross country team finished ninth out of 11 teams at the 2024 NESCAC Championship on Saturday morning at the Pickard Field Cross Country Course on the campus of Bowdoin College.
Conn's
Matt Scardigno (Port Washington, N.Y.) turned in a stellar race that saw him finish third overall, earning All-NESCAC First Team honors for the first time in his career. He becomes just the sixth Camel to record a top-3 finish at the NESCAC Championship.
There was plenty of drama in the team standings as the top four squads were separated by only 11 points. A single point separated Williams (76) and Amherst (77) for the team title, and the margin was equally thin between third-place Middlebury (86) and fourth-place Tufts (87).
Williams' Charles Namiot took home medalist honors with a time of 24:40.81. Bowdoin's Will Goddard finished runner-up in 24:51.09, less than a second ahead of Scardigno at 24:51.93.
Scardigno steadily climbed the leaderboard throughout the 8K race. He was in 32nd place overall at the first split but made up 16 spots by the second and 10 more by the third. He then passed three more runners before the finish line and nearly closed the gap to Goddard.
Ellis Iurilli-Hough (Melrose, Mass.) was the next Camel across the line, placing 44th in a career-best time of 25:48.19.
Anthony Belford (Bay Shore, N.Y.) also cracked the 27-minute mark and finished 74th with a time of 26:23.49.
Deem Quinn (Cranston, R.I.) and
Zach Stoddard (Pomfret Center, Conn.) rounded out the scoring for the Camels; the former placed 108th in 27:03.62 while the latter took 113th in 27:06.70.
Josh Barzilai (Princeton, N.J.) and
Brendan Capodanno (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) filled out Conn's top-7. Barzilai placed 127th in 27:31.03 while Capodanno shaved 30 seconds off his personal record to finish 132nd in 27:38.20.
Conn will next host the D3 Challenge on Saturday, November 9 at Stenger Farm Park in Waterford, Conn.
