AMHERST, Mass. – The Connecticut College women's ice hockey team came up short on the road, falling to No. 4 Amherst 3-1 on Friday night from Orr Rink. With the loss, Conn falls to 0-3 overall and 0-3 in NESCAC play, while Amherst improves to 3-0 on the year and 3-0 in conference action.

Amherst came out quickly, forcing four saves from Devon Galizio (Wayland, Mass.) in the opening three minutes and 20 seconds. Conn got their first shot at 3:46 from Casey Chesner (Great Falls, Va.) but her effort was turned aside. Both sides generated some opportunities, but the game remained scoreless after one.

It did not take long for the Mammoths to open the scoring in the second period, as Amherst drew first blood at 2:22. Cara Mancini opened the scoring with Marie-Eve Marleau and Alejandra Ubarri picking up the assists. With seven and a half minutes left in the period, the Camels were given a golden opportunity to tie the game, after being awarded a power play. On the ensuing advantage, Claire Sammons (Naperville, Ill.) tied the game at 13:20, with Kate Hagness (Madison, Conn.) and Kiley Smith (Humble, Texas) picking up the helpers, as the game was even heading to the third.

Amherst once again scored early in a period, this time going back in front at 3:46. Ayla Abban picked up the unassisted tally, to make it 2-1. Just under six minutes later, the Mammoths added an insurance marker as Ubarri pushed the lead to 3-1 at 9:04. Conn pushed over the final 11 minutes to try and cut into the deficit, but were unable to, falling 3-1.

Amherst outshot Conn 31-23, while winning 31 of 57 draws.

Galizio got the start in goal, finishing with 28 saves on 31 shots. Sammons tallied the lone marker for the Camels as both Hagness and Smith picked up one assist. Sammons and Caitlin Pierce (Edgewater, N.J.) led the way in the face-off circle, as both won nine draws, with Conn finishing 1-4 on the power play and 4-5 on the penalty kill.

Natalie Stott picked up the win, recording 22 saves on 23 shots. Ubarri paced Amherst with two points on one goal and one assist, while five other Mammoths recorded one point. Amherst finished 1-5 on the power play and 3-4 on the penalty kill.
