NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College men's ice hockey team scored twice in the third period, rallying to defeat visiting Middlebury 2-1 on Saturday from Dayton Arena. With the win, Conn improves to 3-1 overall and 3-1 in NESCAC play, while Middlebury falls to 2-2 on the year, and 2-2 in conference action.
It was a slow opening 20 minutes, as both squads felt each out, with each coming off a loss from last night. Both goalies were sharp, as Kellen Beauton (Colchester, Conn.) and Conor Sullivan were both perfect. Beauton stopped all nine shots faced and Sullivan turned away all eight, as the game was scoreless after one.
Middlebury found the icebreaker at 4:27 of the second period. Jin Lee connected with Revy Mack who fired past Beauton to make it 1-0. Conn responded with a strong remainder of the middle frame, peppering Sullivan, but the Camels were unable to find the tying goal, heading to the third period down 1-0.
Conn found the tying goal they were looking for, just two and a half minutes in the final frame. Will Lawrence (Bethesda, Md.) finally beat Sullivan as Logan Cleary (Mentor, Ohio) picked up the assist. Both teams tried to find the go-ahead go, but again both Beauton and Sullivan held strong. With the game looking like it was going to go to overtime, the Camels found the winning goal with 3:27 remaining. After Jack Luca (Milton, Mass.) rang a shot off the crossbar, Lawrence corralled the puck in front the net, where Shane Zarcone (Huntington, N.Y.) pulled it free, beating Sullivan to give Conn the 2-1 win.
Conn outshot Middlebury 36-28, while the Panthers held a slim 33-30 edge on face-off wins.
Beauton was fantastic in goal, earning the win while stopping 27 of 28 shots. Lawrence paced the Camels with a goal and an assist, while Zarcone added a goal and Cleary picked up an assist. John Russo (South Windsor, Conn.) led the way in the circle with 13 face-off wins, with Jack Houser (Arlington, Mass.) adding three blocked shots. Conn finished 3-3 on the penalty kill and 0-5 on the power play.
Sullivan got the start in goal, recording 34 saves on 36 shots. Mack tallied the lone Panthers marker, while Lee added an assist. Middlebury finished the afternoon 0-3 on the power play and 5-5 on the penalty kill.
Conn returns to action on Tuesday night as the Camels host Manhattanville at 7:00 p.m. in Dayton Arena.
