Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Wexler's Shutout Leads Women's Hockey to First Win of the Season

NEWPORT, R.I. – The Connecticut College women's ice hockey team picked up their first win of the season, defeating host Salve Regina 3-0 on Tuesday night from Howard Rink. With the win, Conn improves to 1-4 overall, while Salve Regina falls  to 5-6.

Salve opened the contest with the first shot of the game, but Jillian Wexler (Plainsboro, N.J.) came up with the early save. Conn answered with the next three shots, but both Ashley Engle (Basking Ridge, N.J.) and Casey Chesner (Great Falls, Va.) were turned away. The Seahawks ended the period with three of the last four shots, but Wexler held strong as the game was scoreless after one.

Conn started the middle frame strong, putting pressure on Salve, but the Camels were unable to capitalize. At 8:25 Conn was awarded a power play, and the Camels took advantage. Serena Seiple (Wilmette, Ill.) found Miyu Miyazaki (Chiba, Japan) who fed a pass across the goalmouth to Caitlin Pierce (Edgewater, N.J.) who made no mistake to make it 1-0 at 9:06. A minute and a half later, Conn doubled the lead as Engle converted to make it 2-0 at 10:32.

Salve opened the final period on the front foot, trying to cut the deficit in half, but Wexler came up with some huge saves, while the Camels defense did the Seahawks. Conn picked up a big insurance marker with just over six minutes remaining. Seiple banged home a puck at 13:42 to make it 3-0. With just over three minutes left, Salve was awarded a power play, and pulled the goalie for the two-skater advantage. Wexler and the Camels closed out the final few minutes to come away with the 3-0 win.

Conn outshot Salve 26-15, while holding a slim 22-21 edge on face-off wins.

Wexler records her first shutout as a Camel, tallying 15 saves. Seiple paced Conn with two points on one goal and one assist, while Pierce and Engle each added a goal with Miyazaki chipping in an assist. Claire Sammons led the way in the face-off circle, winning 10 of 14 draws, while Conn finished the evening 2-2 on the penalty kill and 1-2 on the power play.

Taylor Hannafan got the start in goal, recording 23 saves. The Seahawks were led by Gina Richard who tallied five shots on goal, with Salve finishing 0-2 on the power play and 1-2 on the penalty kill.

Conn returns home on Friday night to take on Albertus Magnus at 6:00 p.m. in Dayton Arena.
