NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College women's basketball team held off a second-half charge by Framingham State University to post a 63-56 victory in non-conference action on Thursday night at Luce Field House.
The Camels seized control thanks to a 13-0 run to end the first half, and then protected the lead for the rest of the game. Trailing by double digits, the Rams cut the deficit to three by the end of the third quarter, but Conn closed strong to win the fourth by a 16-12 margin.
Hayle Thompson (Maynard, Mass.) notched a double-double of 17 points and 14 rebounds—both career highs—and added three blocks and a steal.
Addi Hunter (Saint George, Vt.) chipped in 14 points, nine boards and four assists while
Catie Donadio (Clinton, Conn.) added nine points, six rebounds and four assists.
Neither team led by more than four in the opening quarter, but a three by
Avery Burns (Orleans, Mass.) put Conn on top 16-14 after one. Early in the second period, Katherine Haselton drilled a three to put the Rams back in front. The visitors led until a jumper by
Sydney Marshall (Enfield, Conn.) ignited the 13-0 run over the final 5:08 of the half. Marshall provided six points during the spurt, and Donadio capped the stretch with a three-pointer to put the hosts up 33-23 at intermission.
Thompson turned in a monster first half, netting 12 of her 17 points and grabbing 11 boards. Haselton led Framingham State with nine points at the break.
Haselton and Abigail Martin combined for 13 of Framingham State's 21 points in the third quarter. The Rams closed the period with a 10-2 run that featured five points from Martin and a three-pointer by Chloe Rayko to cut the deficit to 47-44.
Catherine Cole (Lebanon, N.H.) provided a clutch three to steady the ship for Conn early in the fourth. Framingham State missed on its first five field goal attempts of the stanza, and Hunter added a jumper with 5:32 to go to extend the lead to 52-44.
Another three by Rayko trimmed Conn's lead to 55-51 with 1:51 left, but the Camels sealed the win by going 8-for-10 from the free throw line. Both teams attempted 18 freebies in the contest, but Conn shot 72 percent from the stripe compared to 39 percent for Framingham State.
Haselton led all scorers with 20 points and added eight rebounds and seven assists to pace the Rams (6-6 overall). Martin finished with a double-double of 15 points and 12 boards.
